Debating watching the Oscars tonight, have it recorded, may or may not watch all of it. Not that interesting a year, rather predictable and as I discussed with Momster, will be rather annoyed if some of the front-runners don't win.

But here's my predictions, keeping in mind I have not seen all the films. To be honest, the movies released in theaters this year and last held little interest for me. I saw most at the end of the year or on netflix.

1. Colin Firth - Best Actor, The King's Speech (second nomination, which should be a lock.)
2. The King's Speech Best Movie (although I'd give it to True Grit or The Fighter, maybe even Black Swan, but that's only because I haven't seen it. I don't know why Social Network got nominated. Toy Story 3 is getting the Best Animated film.)
3. Natalie Portman - Best Actress - Black Swan (she basically makes the film work. It wouldn't work without her gutsy performance.)
4. Christian Bale - Best Supporting - The Fighter (also blew me away.)
5. Melissa Leo - Best supporting actress (The Fighter) or Hattie Stienfield (True Grit) - either works for me.
6. Screenplay - Adapted - will probably be Sorkin, but I'd rather it was someone else, because The Social Network just wasn't that memorable. ( I'd pick Toy Story 3 or True Grit, but I haven't seen Winter's Bone or 127 Hours. It might be Winter's Bone - sometimes they give it to the indie that gets nothing else.
7. Screenplay - Original - will probably be Nolan, but again, rather someone else, since that was a film that was flawed as well (I'd go with The Fighter, but haven't seen Another Year or The Kids Are Alright or The King's Speech.)
8. Animated - Toy Story 3 (Although I hear interesting things about the Illusionist and I enjoyed How to Train Your Dragon. But come on, Toy Story 3 was nominated for Best Movie too.)
9. Best Director? So don't care. Probably Fincher for the Social Network, but I'd pick Darron Aronsky or the guy who directed The Fighter - David O'Russell. The Coen Brothers just keep getting nominations and have won already and this is not their best film, they've won for their best films.
10. Best Song? No clue. Only one I know is We Belong Together from Toy Story 3. Guessing Coming Home from Country Strong?
11. Documentary - Inside Job or Exit Through the Gift Shop
12. Foreign Film - Biutiful
13. Film Editing - The Social Network - that's all about editing. So for that mater was the Black Swan and The Fighter.
14. Cinematography - probably Inception. (I'd give it to True Grit or Black Swan. The King's Speech is a costume drama/parlor drama and The Social Network is internal - both can be watched on the small screen, why were they nominated?)
15. Art Direction - Inception which is all about art direction. (Alice had great art direction but was rather busy, Harry Potter - also busy, although tempting but doubtful, and the other two historical period pieces - which are actually easier to do from what I hear from art directors.)
16. Animated Short - Day & Night (but it's also the only one I saw.)
17. Visual Effects - Inception (although Harry Potter was quite good, Alice - busy and headache inducing. Iron Man 2 - cheesy. Inception was the best of this group.)
18. Sound Mixing - The Social Network
19. Sound Editing - Toy STory 3 - sound editing is key in complex animated work
20. Costume Design - The King's Speech (they usually give it to historicals, although I enjoyed Alice's costumes.)
21. Original Score - didn't see two of them yet. So it's probably The Social Network or Inception.

It's hard to care though. I used to care...now I find television more entertaining and theater. Also can watch it all on netflix.

Off to make dinner. Maybe read. Maybe watch the Oscars. Let's see how wrong I was tomorrow.

I agree w/your opinions of who will win... my cousin pointed out that Colin Firth won the SAG awards and those are exactly the same voting pool as for Best Actor, so he probably does have a lock on it (and you know I adored his performance, which IMO was about a lot more than a stutter).

And I'm excited to see Ann Hathaway and James Franco hosting (I hope they do well).

Well I'm all packed to hit the road again tomorrow... I hope you have a good week!

Safe trip! Where are you off to now?

My mother has been raving about Firth's performance in the King's Speech over phone for months. Haven't seen it yet. Looking forward to renting it on netflix soon - probably in April or May. It's been doing very well in theaters.
