I caved. Decided to give myself a little treat and upgraded to HBO with On Demand. YAY!
Very excited to see Game of Thrones and last Seasons True Blood which is being re-run on it.
I think it was a combination of Bellafante's annoying NY Times review and the realization that some of the best tv shows are popping up on HBO - they are also prepping Neil Gaiman's American Gods for a series. And "Game Change".

It's not that pricey. About the price of a movie once a month - and I rarely go to movies any more.
(Movies in NYC cost $15 without popcorn or soda.)

I guess it should be noted that I am not a subscriber to the NY Times - why bother, I get better news and reviews for free elsewhere. The Times has gone downhill over the past four years. I used to subscribe and pick up every weekend, but finally gave up.

I respect your decision to get HBO, $15/mo is not too much for something that genuinely gives you pleasure... and you can always cancel at any time if you change your mind (I signed up for HBO for just one month one summer so I could watch Wimbledon).

I thought seriously about paying for Showtime so I could watch Dexter when it aired... but my 'other sources' have remained very reliable (but it remains a fall back position, if I need it).

Thanks. Hopeless TV addict here. ;-)

I was lusting after three things - and decided I'd go with the one I can afford. The I-Pad (I can't afford - it's $600 up front and $30 monthly), the smartphone/i-phone also can't afford - about $250 up front and $30-40 monthly, plus apps.
But HBO is just $15. I'll eventually get a smartphone..just not this year.

I had never priced the iPad or iPhone (although I've thought about how cool it would be to get one or both...), but that is more than I want to pay.

Yeah, HBO will provide a lot of entertainment value (speaking as one TV addict to another!).
