Feeling a bit culturally compulsive tonight - also bored of my television choices, so I read Neil Gaiman's journal and decided to ask him a question on his Doctor Who episode. He's taking questions. Mine aren't great and I'm hoping he didn't answer similar one's elsewhere. The first was about process - the degree to which Stephen Moffat and the show-runner contributes or influences a writer's episode and how much of it was influenced by Moffat to maintain the arc. The second was how he writes - what the jumping off point is - a specific theme or a character - ie. The Tardis. See, not great questions, but I was bored.

Also down-loaded Amanda Palmer songs from itunes - from her album Who Killed Amanda Palmer and her songs blew me away. Completely new and different, with a raw edge. Yes, they are alternative like 60% of my music - hence all the hunting new tunes. But they sound different somehow. Not sure how. Everything I currently have sounds like Arcade Fire meets The Cranberries with a dose of Kate Bush. (Hope it didn't come across as brown-nosing to thank him for mentioning her? Considering she is his wife. This is why I don't write or interact with professional novelists and artists. No matter what you say, it comes across as pandering. And eww. I've read and followed Gaiman since the late 1980s/90s, off and on, with the Sandman comics. So, yes, you can probably consider me a fan. Albeit a critical fan, but as you know, I'm a critical fan of every cultural bit I love.]

Other things I downloaded - included songs from the Rolling Stones album Aftermath thanks to [livejournal.com profile] frenchani for rec'ing (I have most of their stuff on the four disc Hot Rocks CD set - which are basically the Stones Greatest Hits). Songs by a guy I went to school with, a tall lanky blond with a chocolate voice, named Sand Sheff. My ex-college boyfriend's songs are on itunes too, but I blatantly ignored him - he ruined the Grateful Dead, Dylan and The Beatles White Album for me for years. It wasn't until recently that I could listen to Dear Prudence and The Beatles White Album again. Brilliant album, that I forgot. Still can't listen to Don't Think Twice, it's Alright without wanting to strangle Bob Dylan (Dylan wrote it to whine about some gal who wouldn't sleep with him, Dylan did that a lot - Dylan is a jerk. Ex-boyfriend felt the odd need to emulate him. And well, I used to have a thing for self-involved singers and philosophy majors (I outgrew it).) (Speaking of self-involved singers and philosophy majors... I also downloaded *cough*GhostintheRobot*cough* - which, believe it or not, sounds a lot better on itunes than it did in person in a country western dive in Farmingdale, Long Island. Probably because the band wasn't drunk and too busy trying to get laid by the pretty 19 year old fans in the front row, to actually, you know sing. This amongst other reasons is why I hate live music in NY. I'm odd, I like to actually hear the music, not everything else.) And of course, my favorite Sondheim musical - Into the Woods. (My least favorite is Company - which I find repulsive, even though it does have at least four great songs in it. - I told you my music taste is bizarre. I also have Crash Test Dummies, Garbage, Pink Floyd, Green Day, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Beethoven, Tchsvaschy, Gershwin, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, Bush, and Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Lush, amongst others. What I've been trying to do is mix it up a bit - far too much alternative (and yes, I know, none of those are really alternative.) Oooh...I should grab some Queen! I love Queen. Yes, I know it's cheesy, but that's why I love it! This new ipod touch gadget is dangerous - it's easier to purchase music off of than my computer is and a lot of fun. Like having an instant music store at your fingertips.) Hee.

Speaking of Repulsive? Read in the Metro that novelist Jonathan Lethem moved to LA from NYC, because NYC is repulsive with novelists. He's not wrong. In the last ten years - it seems as if anyone who ever got an MFA in Creative Writing or wanted one has moved to the city. I've never seen so many writer's meetup groups in my life.

I love Amanda Palmer. Her music is amazing, also the older albums with the Dresden Dolls.

It was so much fun when I first read they had paired up, because I had been a fan of both of them for such a long time. It kinda fit. The other kind of celebrity couple.

Have you gotten the 8in8 Album? It's this little charity album. I had bought it because I read of it on Gaiman's blog and I love it to pieces. Especially the Joan of Arc song:

No just the one mentioned - Who Killed Amanda Palmer - because cool title. But thanks for the Rec. I really do need to stop doing this though. I've added over 300 new songs to my mp3 player now.
