Finished watching True Blood S3 Finale. Was a fun finale.
* King Russell is amusing right up to the end. Sookie just tortures him. Then Eric buries him in cement, while Godric tries to talk him out of it. Hmm, I think the writer is more interested in Eric than Bill, Eric certainly has a better arc. Bill's a bit grating. But Ball seems to enjoy making fun of him. (I finally saw the first two episodes of the season - and Pacquin does an excellent Bill imitation of him saying Sookie.)
* Bill, bill, bill...do you really think you can take out two 1000 year old vampires by yourself? Particularly one who just had Sookie's blood - not once but twice? How stupid are you? Apparently, pretty stupid - he's decided to try to take out a 3000 year old vampire - the Queen. Although he appears to survive into S4, so maybe...not so stupid? (No, he didn't die - I should be so lucky. Alan Ball isn't as nice to me as George RR Martin - who kills off self-righteous and hypocritical characters who annoy me right and left. This may explain why I like Game of Thrones more than True Blood, that and the fact that it is actually better written, but then it did have better source material. Also I like dry wit better than satire..that said, there are a few funny bits in the finale of True Blood.)
*Tommy to Sam: You want shoot me. You don't have it in you. (And he walks off with all of Sam's money in a bag, convinced his justified.)
Me to Tommy: Oh I wouldn't be so sure of that if I were you. He's definitely going to shoot you.
Sam shoots Tommy.
Me: Yep. Told you. (Also innwardly applauding, because Tommy was annoying. Why do writers insist on writing teenage male characters like this in these types of shows? In Angel it was Connor, in Farscape, Tayln, in Nip/Tuck - botox face, in Game of Thrones - Joffrey (although at least we don't get as much of him and aren't meant to like him, also he's completely irredeemable.) )
So is Tommy actually dead? I really hope so.
*Tara to Sam - You aren't a werewolf are you? I can't handle anymore supernatural creatures in my life right now.
Sam: No.
Tara:Thank god. Because I really don't want anything else not human...
Sam: I'm a shape-shifter.
Tara: No way. What? You aren't!
Sam: Yep. That's what I am.
(Tara clearly annoyed that there's yet another thing she has to worry about.)
Tara: You couldn't tell me that before I slept with you! That's something you said say first..
Sam: Well now you know.
Tara: I got to get out of here, I can't deal with any non-humans anymore. I need a change.
(So she goes home, freaks when she sees Mom with the married Minister, and decides to go home and cut her hair. Okay, why do female characters on gothic tv shows always decide to cut off their hair whenever they want a change?)
I was sort of disappointed by this turn of events. I rather like Sam and Tara together. Granted Sam's not perfect, but at least he's not a possessed serial killer like Eggs or a vampire serial rapist/serial killer like Franklin Mott. Tara has the worst taste in men. She can give Sookie a run for her money.
*Jason for reasons that escape me decides to fall in love with mousy were-panther Crystal. Who has all the sexual appeal of a rag-doll. Although kudos to Ball for not casting a hot actress in that role - far more realistic. Granted Crystal is dumber than Jason and needs Jason, also she has a family that is dumber than Jason - which is possibly appealing. He can be the leader of the were-panthers. Odd - they killed off Calvin - who was actually a major supporting character in the books, albeit highly annoying and incredibly creepy - he kept trying to talk Sookie into marrying him. (Yes, Sookie got around in the books, her romantic life is actually rather dull and conservative in the tv series. In the books - she hooks up with Bill, Alcide, sort of flirts with Calvin - but it's similar to her flirtation with Sam, hooks up with a Were-Tiger Arbitrator, and finally Eric - who like the series, was the most interesting and appealing of the romantic interests. Although Alcide is hot here. He just isn't that interesting.)
*Arlene can't get rid of Rene's kid, and apparently Michael James who played Renee gets to come back and play his ghost. Cool.
*Bill brings Sookie back to life, Sookie is understandably pissed at him for allowing Eric and Russell to suck her dry. Bill defends himself - explaining Eric's plan.
Sookie: Where's Eric?
Bill: he handcuffed himself to Russell to kill him, it was the only way.
Sookie: So he's outside? Why? Is he crazy?
Pam (crying in pride): Yes...he's doing it for us...it was the only way to rid us of Russell.
Sookie: I can't let him do that. I'm going out there and bringing him back in.
Bill: Why? Let him die!
Sookie: No.
Bill: I won't let you.
Sookie: You don't own me. (And off she goes to save Eric with her fairy powers.)
After bringing Eric back to life with her blood.
Eric convinces Sookie to go outside and retrieve Russell. (This made no sense to me. If I were Sookie, I'd have just left and told the slew of them to go to hell. But then I'm not entirely sure I understand why she decided to save Eric. Eric's motivation makes more sense - he's saving Russell, because he doesn't want him to find peace, he wants to torture him - actually maybe he explained that to Sookie off-screen and I missed it. That would make sense.)
After Sookie drags him inside and they tie him up - she proceeds to torture him, while the others
go downstairs to nap. She does it by throwing Talbout's remains down the garbag disposal unit. Apparently Russell had hoped to use her blood to bring back Talbot. So go Sookie.)
* Bill thinking he's gotten rid of Eric and Pam, goes to Sookie to say he will rid the world of anyone who has tasted her blood or knows what she is, because all vampires aren't as honorable as he is and can't control themselves where she's concerned. (Right, considering you almost killed her twice, I'd say you're real good at controlling yourself. Why is it that all the lead vampire hero/love interests in these shows always copt a "holier than thou" attitude that makes me want to smack them? ) Oh, cool, Eric shows up and smacks him down a peg or two without raising a hand. And it's just not fair that Alexander Skargard looks hot half covered in cement. How is that possible? He's better looking than Bill, he just looks scrawny and a bit spiderish next to him.
Eric: Oh, Sookie, did Bill tell you that he manipulated those two psychos into beating you half-to-death just so that you would have to drink his blood to get well? Doubt you'll be forgiving him for that any time soon.
Gee, Bill, guess you're regretting trying to off Eric and Pam at the moment. Next time? Make sure they are actually dead. Rather glad they aren't I was annoyed at Bill. I mean, really, Pam and Eric are lot more entertaining than you and Sookie.
Rather enjoyable finale. Can't wait for the new season to start - which will be in Game of Thrones time slot, now that it's finishing up. Prefer Game, but True Blood is fun. And I have a weakness for amensia storylines - particularly in relation to big hunky blond vampires that aren't Bill Compton.

Date: 2011-06-20 04:16 pm (UTC)True. But they are different story structures.
Game is a novel for tv, much like the Wire is. Each episode a chapter in the tale, well plotted, thoroughly researched, and outlined ahead of time.
Also the writers know exactly what is going to happen next. Where each character arc is. And what they audience has to know or what must be revealed about each character. Also Game is following the books very closely.
True Blood in comparison is a soap opera. The writer really hasn't intricately plotted the story out ahead of time. He's not following the books that closely, outside of using them as a way to obtain new ideas or spring off of. Example? In the books, the Manead comes up but is a throw-away monster which is barely examined, she just poisons Sookie and they save her. End of story. In S2 - she has a huge effect on the entire cast. Soap operas by nature have these throw-away scenes and tend to talk everything to death. I like soaps, but they can be irritating in that respect. (I mean did we really need the scene between Sam and Terry?)
Sadly, I fear Tommy isn't dead.
I guess it's possible that Sam just shoots to wound, not kill? If so? Darn.
