shadowkatYes, I'm still reading about the new tv shows in EW. Oh, on Fringe? There's a few people on my flist that I think would like this series and aren't watching...the one's who have a thing for father/son or parent/child relationships? If you liked Angel/Connor? You'll love Fringe. Just a suggestion. Also it's heavy on the science/philosophy stuff. Plus a tough female FBI lead. I've only watched the first five episodes - these are mainly set-up and feel a tad formulaic to be honest with a definite X-Files vibe. So I'm not into it yet. Just sort of mildly curious. We shall see what happens. (Am trying to stay away from spoilers on Fringe, already heavily spoiled as it is.)
Currently reading about the new PRime Suspect - which actually sounds good. It has a killer cast: Maria Bello (History of Violence) Aidan Quinn (Legends of the Fall, a bunch of other indie films), Peter Gerety (Homicide, The Wire), Kirk Acevedo (OZ/Fringe), Brian F. O'Bryne (Brotherhood, Mildred Pierce), Kenny Johnson (The Shield). It's produced and directed by Peter Berg and his partner Sarah Aubrey (who did Friday Night Lights), and written by Alexandra Cunningham - a huge fan of the Helen Mirren original. So...hmmm. But it has been tailored to fit the American procedural (wrap up each case within one episode) as opposed to my preference - the British procedural (wrap up a case over the course of several episodes). I prefer the British model - it's more novel like.
Oh and we get still more information on American Horror Story. "There's no place for the word typical anywhere," says Britton (Friday Night Lights). "That's the thing about this show - it sort of defies explanation." (Clearly you've never watched Nip/Tuck. Because yep, that's Ryan Murphy.) "When Horror isn't trying to scare the pants off you, it's ripping the pants of its characters: Vivien has sex with a man in a rubber fetish suit, and Ben pleasures himself while being spied on by a badly burned man (True Blood's Denis O'Hare - who apparently pops up as King Russell - or he's doing a series of different but badly burned characters?) - who by the way, warns Ben that the house drove him to commit murder. (Oh. We are doing Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, just in an BSDM club. And without Jack Nicholson.) Star Trek's Zachary Quinto will also play a doomed former resident. Say's McDermott (The Practice), "Some actors were really afraid of the sexuality (on the show). It didn't really bother me because I felt like if you're going to do this, you've got to go all the way." And Murphy agrees with you. Seriously this thing sounds like Nip/Tuck meets Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (or more likely The Amityville Horror) while attempting to be a blend of Twin Peaks, put in a meat mixer with a touch of David Lynch, Crowley, Wes Craven and Clive Barker for flavor. In short, it's going to make Dollhouse and Twin Peaks look really tame by comparison. Curious to see if anyone can follow it story wise or if it's just going to be a tacky shock-fest. I don't doubt it will be a shocking spectacle for the eyes, and yet another tv show I can hold up to the rest of the world as proof that American Television can be cruder and far more out there (okay depraved...). And you thought they had to edit Torchwood for American sensibilities? OR Skins? Hah. Well, only if it's on MTV or the broadcast networks. F/X - pretty much anything goes. Why Fox didn't put Dollhouse on F/X - I've no idea. At least Dollhouse had an interesting concept behind it. This is basically The Amityville Horror with a lot of sex.
Then we have ...Revenge - the write up of this is hilarious. Emily Van Camp's squeaky clean period is over. "She's kind of a crocodile" says the actress, "I imagine her navigating this community of people as this very quiet predator". A pretty blond crocodile.
I'm odd, I know - I scan the shows for the ones that are the quirkiest, cultish/out there, and guaranteed to last no more than one season or in today's world more than one episode. To wit? 1) Once Upon a Time. 2) Hell on Wheels, 3)Ringer, 4)Grimm, 5)American Horror Story, 6) Bedlam (a British import about the supernatural goings on at an apartment building), 7)Subrugatory and maybe 8) Terra Nova. Also 9) Revenge (which just looks like fun - who can resist a pretty blond crocodile preying on a wealthy annoying family in the Hamptons?)
I'm consistent about this. In the past - I've watched American Gothic, Vr5 (ASH was sexier in VR5 than he was in Buffy by the way and Vr5 was in some respects weirder and more out there - think Dollhouse meets Neuromancer), Twin Peaks, the one where John Goodman dies and becomes Eric Close which I can't remember the name of, Profit, Firefly, Dollhouse, Caprica, Drive, Tru Calling, the David Greenwalt one with Billy Crudup that he left Angel to do and didn't last more than five episodes, Space Above and Beyond, Earth 2, Battle Star Galatica (v.1), Star Trek, Space 1999, the one about the restaurant on the edge of forever and the three people who keep having to redeem themselves with Robert Englund as a mysterious caretaker which I also can't remember the name of, Others.....it does get old after a while. I've gotten so used to tv shows that I like getting canceled before their time, that I don't do much more than shrug when it happens any longer.

Date: 2011-09-08 04:22 pm (UTC)Fringe is one of those shows that I bailed on in the first season like Supernatural for being an uninteresting X-Files rip-off.
Yeah, I did the same thing for more or less the same reasons. Then I got bored one summer and dipped into Supernatural again. (It takes off in the 2nd or 3rd Season becomes this huge brother/brother and brother/father bro-romance thing. Basically the Bill Paxton film Fraility. But I don't think you'd like it at all. So not rec'd. I have issues with it. )
Fringe...on the other hand..different story.
I don't think it has more than one more season left, but the writers know their fans and are writing the last season as a love letter to their fans. So it does wrap itself up. The story has a huge father/son relationship at its core, but it also has a kickass female heroine who is the lead and prinicipal pov. Plus lots of metaphysical/philosophical science stuff to pick apart.
Think Angel/Connor plus Faith show. Except Faith is younger, a little more stable, and is involved with Connor not Angel - because Angel's an old dude, and Connor is in his 30s like Faith. Also in the real world with weird science not demons.
