The only problem with Fringe? Is that it can be incredibly gross and hit at things that, well were why I did not watch the X-Files. Although, they do a good job with the gross - unlike Ryan Murphy, they don't feel compelled to show me everything...just suggest it really strongly. In short, they trust the audience to fill in the blanks (which is also like the X-Files). But unlike the X-Files it is also incredibly funny in places. Horror must be funny, otherwise there is no point!

Typical conversation:

Walter: Mr Papaya will serve as our example. This is incredibly upsetting because Papayas are such a friendly fruit.
(He sends high levels of microwavable heat into Mr. Papaya until it explodes under the glass)
Olivia: Microwaves made it explode?
Walter does a scientific explanation. Then adds: Yes, its the vibrations that cause the molecules to explode. What would work even better though is live flesh. I have some gerbils that I could use-
Olivia: No, no, please don't.

Olivia decides to go question someone. Peter decides to go with.
Walter: Could you bring me back some cotton candy?

Earlier.
Walter: I have three questions...one who was treating her, and what caused this.
Peter: That's two questions.
Walter: Ah. Well this looks like a great soup. Can I some of this french onion soup.

And earlier still.

Walter humming.
Olivia: doesn't that bother you?
Peter: Walter goes to sleep every night counting aloud to the ninth of pie, this is actually soothing.

At least, whoever is writing this has a sense of humor.

I'm on episode six - we're still in episodic nasty terrorist practice of the week territory. Which is annoying. This episode is The Cure. Has a nice twist, I'll give it that. But still too much like X-Files meets 24 or Alias. That said? More entertaining than anything else at the moment. Also quite funny in places. Plus the characters are slowly growing on me. It really is a bit like watching the Angel, Connor, and Faith show...except Angel is played by John Nobel and is a bit crazy and a genius, Connor is a con-man and in his 30s and a lot better looking than well Connor was, and Faith is blond and an FBI agent. Although I swear Lance Reddick sounds like Lt. Daniels from The Wire but in a really really bad mood all of the time. He might even break a blood vessel. I miss Blair Brown.

This episode does have back story...though. So you have to watch it. Or rather I do. Olivia tells the story of her nasty step-father. Who she wanted to kill. Because he beat her mother. She does shoot him quite a few times, but he lives. And ever year on her birthday he sends her a card to remind her that he is still alive and today is her birthday.

Remember what I said about back story? Guess what...Blair Brown pops up and we get back-story on Peter, plus future story. Blair Brown says they spent time together when he was young. She knows he has contacts around the world that could be useful to her. If she gives him the info that he needs, he will do her a favor later, no questions asked. Peter agrees. The B plot line is sort of cool.

LOL! I did enjoy their banter - which was well delivered by both actors. Saw more of it in the stand-a-lone's. Those episodes are the only two I remember though, and well the one with the Angel, and the inbreed hillbillies (which was just gross and Supernatural copied.)
