Episode 8...of Fringe, why didn't anyone tell me this was a comedy?

Walter: I was hired to create a pattern of flashing lights, Xmas flashing lights to hypnotize people, get them to do things..
Peter: The government had you experimenting with Xmas lights?
Walter: It wasn't the government. It was an advertising agency. They wanted to broadcast the flashing lights during commercials to make the audience want to shop and buy their products.
Peter: Did it work?
Walter: Well, fortunately no, it only caused nausea, which was ah.. unfortunate...because apparently people don't want to shop when they are feel they are about to throw up.
