Since it is sort of clearing up, I'm trying to talk myself into taking my semi-annual or annual trip to Lord and Taylor - to go "clothes" shopping, because I'm bored with my wardrobe again and feel it needs updating. But here's the thing about me and shopping? Since I'm not a fan, it requires that I be in the perfect mood. I have to a)not be desperate, b)not be irritable, c)feel great about my body and being in my own skin (which believe or not, actually does happen on occasion, shocking, I know), and d) love the idea of trying on and looking at new clothes in a mirror. Checking out new fashions. (which also happens on occasion). In short I have to be in "a good mood".

And I thought for a bit...that this was the weekend for it. But, no. I'm irritable as all get out this week. Was a slow frustrating work week. Also, have plans to go flat/apt shopping on Sunday with agent. (Which I have mixed feelings about.) So two shopping trips, after a highly frustrating week, is probably not a good idea. For some people - clothes shopping puts them in a better mood or cheers them up, it does the opposite for me. In short, as stated above? I have to start out in a REALLY good mood to go clothes shopping. I blame my mother - she hates clothes shopping. Going shopping with my mother has always been a headache inducing experience, and at times fairly traumatizing. Don't get me wrong, I adore my mother, but shopping just is not her thing. Great parent - except when it came to shopping. It's probably genetic. My grandmother hated shopping too.

I envy women who are great shoppers. My brother, ironically, is really good at this sort of thing.
He's great at shopping. Always has been. So maybe not genetic?

I think everyone in my family enjoys (or enjoyed, for those who are gone now) more than me... it is partly my hating crowds and going into over load when there is too much stuff demanding my attention.
Of course it helps that I don't even try to be fashionable... If I'm looking for hardware items or garden tools (whatever) as a place like Costco or Target, then I will notice if they have pants or cute shirts on sale.... Sometimes they even have a beautiful sweater or two (or a bathing suit).

I know what you mean about having to be in the mood... and really it might be better to save your relaxed 'good' mood for condo hunting, because you really do need to buy a home!

That's my problem as well - too many choices. I tend to shut-down when I get too many choices or too much thrown at me at once. It's why I prefer smaller grocery stores to big ones. I can't stand stores like Target, Wallmart, and Costco - I feel overwhelmed by them and get lost. LOL!

It's very odd. Because I never really feel that lost or overwhelmed in cities like NYC or London or Paris. Although Times Square drives me nuts, but it drives everyone nuts. (Have a friend who has lived on the other side of it for ten years, so I'm used to going through it and know how to thread my way ...but it still overwhelms.)

It's also why I prefer Brooklyn to Manhattan, or small book stores to big ones. Or L&T to Macy's - I can't do Macy's - I get lost every time. LOL!

somehow I don't find big container stores to be as overwhelming as fancy clothes stores.... The shelves of boxes just seem like storage, they don't seem to demand my attention. Maybe that is just me.
It might also help that I avoid shopping at peak times (I love it when the big store is empty or nearly so).

Yeah I can see why Times Square would drive anyone nuts (I always lose my sense of direction when I'm there... ending up walking blocks out of my way before I figure out where I want to be).

I usually do pretty well in big cities because I usually just cordon it off in my mind, only dealing with one neighborhood at a time, and getting the lay of the land. I get really terribly lost driving in the suburbs of New Jersey (actually a lot of states have real problem areas for me) where I immediately run into construction, so my directions won't work and since I have no sense of direction I just get more and more lost. It took me 3-4 hours to find [livejournal.com profile] biffsbabe's house the last time I went there!
