Nov. 11th, 2011 08:20 pm1.) Was reminded again today that on the 11th day, of the 11th month, at the 11th hour, WWI was concluded - one of the worst and deadliest and dumbest wars of the 20th Century. If you want to see a good film on WWI, at the time called the War to end all Wars? Try Peter Weir's Gallopi from the Australian perspective, from the German? The classic novel, and later film adaptation: All Quiet on the Western Front. From Wiki: "All Quiet on the Western Front (German: Im Westen nichts Neues) is a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I. The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental stress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many of these soldiers upon returning home from the front."
As I told a co-worker today, we probably wouldn't have had WWII and Hitler would never have rose to power, if it weren't for WWI.
2) Work continues to drain me. Told ...not to sure what to call him..friend? Not quite that close. Acquaintance? Eh. Closer than that. He is cute, in a very odd, grows on you sort of way...Anyhow, I told him that I didn't know how he did it - all those committees, busy every night, when I could barely get up the energy to cook dinner each night. I come exhausted, often sleep on the train, and all I want to do is veg. I wonder if my job is just more intense? It could be that...the other jobs I had, I did more after work - went to plays, concerts, wrote novels, took courses, went clubbing, etc. As you get older, work gets more intense and exhausting. Well, if you are lucky, I suppose. Plus less vacation time. So not fair. I had more vacation time when I was 30. OTOH = should be happy have a job. Do wish boss didn't think the best way to manage his employees was to interrogate them. I told him I felt like I was being interrogated, he said that was the point and I needed to get a thicker skin. I honestly wonder about our educational system sometimes. Bullying is not justifiable people. Sigh. I mentioned what he said to a colleague who told me he was crazy, she had 20 years of supervisory experience behind her and had run her own business.
3)Buffy fanficSpike fanfic - the only Spike fanfic that I have not seen is one that I come up with but never wrote. Did discuss it at length as a hypothetical back in 2002 with a friend. It's one in which instead of getting a soul at the end of S6, Spike is turned human and on the journey home, he turns into a hardened and kickass vampire slayer a la Robin Wood. Tough. Gritty. Filled with Shame and Self-loathing. Fought his way back to Sunnydale. He doesn't look the same. Tanned. Dark brown hair. Wrinkles around the eyes. In his 40s, not 20s. Haunted eyes. She doesn't recognize, except that there is something oddly familar, but no...and no, no one does, except Giles figures him out. Too much Ripper. And there's a scene, which me and my friend plotted out - where human, hardened Spike talks to tormented Willow, forces Willow to confront what she did, while he confronts what he did. I was fascinated by the characters realization that they'd become the very thing they once despised - fought against. The irony of that realization. And accepting responsiblity for it, then doing the work to move one, change, and learn from it. [I think my disappointment with the series...was in part due to my own imagination. I came up with better story ideas with my friends online that I liked better than the writers. It's always sad when you like your ideas or your friends are better than the writers. Then you stop following the writer because they cease to do their job which is to inform and entertain. Hmmm. I wonder if that's why so many writers are threatened by fanfic? ]
I'm pathetic I can't think of four things. Oh, it's gotten cold and my period started.
Oh Parenthood referenced gluten-free pizza and Harry Potter in the same sentence.

Date: 2011-11-12 03:32 pm (UTC)Yes. Every single one I've read does. Even the one I wrote did that, so I guess I can't complain.
But the idea I came up with before I saw Grave and found out he got his soul, instead of being turned human, is the one that haunts me and I keep hunting. And no one has done it.
In my story idea - he changes his name, takes over the role of Giles, and no one knows who he is or what his game is.
Kick-ass middle-aged human Spike sounds frickin' awesome, though, and strikes me as more plausible all around. (I have a Thing for older characters who remain stunningly competent at what they do.)
Hee, so do I...always have. And I think it is more plausible. Why would he change back into mopey William? Angel didn't change back into Liam when he turned human. I keep waiting for someone else to write it. If no one else does, I may have to at some point just to get the idea out of my system. ;-)
