ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

[ETA - from me not the original posters: A caveat? Copyright Law gives me a head-ache. I find it confusing and I worked in the damn field for 6-7 years. And the ethics around it to be even more confusing. And I keep changing my mind regarding it. Personally? I think Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a violation and shouldn't have been done...but then again, maybe not. After all, is it a violation to just insert zombies into Austen's text? I don't know. The whole thing confuses me. And as much as it has always grated on my nerves that people make money reviewing and critiquing others works - as the Momster pointed out, isn't that what historians do? Isn't that a good thing? To which I responded...okay, I'm irritable and edgy and have been walking up and down the street all day long to go to the bathroom..I'm admittedly being a bit irrational about this. It's probably just annoyance that I too can't be lazily sitting on my duff making money off of meta. Actually it is a lot more work than that - you have to do marketing and shit. And who wants to do that?]
