Game of Thrones -Episode 2.2

Still rivets my attention like nothing else on tv. I think the only other shows that come close at the moment are Once, Good Wife, and Justified. But in some respects, Game is better and far more interesting.

Wish I could remember the names of all of the characters let alone spell them. I had the same problem with the books. I swear Martin has so many characters - you need a bloody chart, and a lot of them look a like, which doesn't help.

Love the dialogue in this series and the deft acting. It's like watching a really gritty BBC Masterpiece Theater Fantasy - what with all of the British Actors.

* Tyrion, specifically Peter Dinklage's portrayal of Tyrion, has rapidly become my favorite character in this series. I'm riveted when he is on screen. That actor does marvelous things with his eyes.

By the way? This is not Dinklage's first award winning role. If you haven't already, please go rent The Station Agent. You can thank me later, or not as the case may be. Amazing film, after seeing that years ago, then reading Game, I saw Dinklage in the role in my head and no one else.

At any rate - there's several excellent scenes, all brilliantly set-up, and all set-up future bits. 1) Varys and Shae...depicting to Tyrion the danger of having Shae there. She is his one great weakness, his achilles heel. And Varys is correct, he makes a better friend than foe. As Stark learned to his great chagrin. That said, Tyrion plays the game better than Stark did. 2) The set-up of Tyrion getting rid of the Knight's Watch Commander whom he has rightly figured out is either Cersei or Joffrey's man. Makes more sense to have his own in place. The only problem...Bronn is a mercernary and not loyal to anyone but money. Both Shae and Bronn are alike in this regard, they are loyal to money and will most likely turn on Tyrion the moment a higher payer comes along. To be fair, they have no real reason to be otherwise. Bronn is up front about it - when Tyrion asks if he would kill a child sucking at her mother's breast without question, Bronn states, not without question - I'd ask how much. I'm in this for the money and there's little I won't do for it. 3) Tyrion confronts Cersei about the killings and learns that she didn't order them.
But Joffrey did tell her. And he's right the fact Joffrey told her, but she could not stop it...is almost worse. She admits that she resents Tyrion for killing her mother in childbirth. They are uneasy allies and worse enemies.

* Little-Finger, or Lord Baelish - yes, we are back to the sex-exposition that HBO is famous for. It's in all HBO's series, by the way. It was in The Wire (actually the actors comment on it in the commentary - about how the Wire loved to show women's breasts), Sopranoes, and True Blood. Haven't seen as much dick this season though, quite a bit of ass however.

At any rate...the scenes with Aiden Gillen's Lord Baelish...or Little Finger (since I can't spell Baelish)...were chilling. And creepy. The character is creepy in the books too by the way. He reminds me a bit of a spider. Here he's peeping on the sex acts. Then tells Roz - a rather gruesome tale of what he did to the last whore who disappointed him and did not give him a good return on his investment. (He basically gave her to a sadistic creep.)
I have no idea if this scene was in the books, because I don't remember Clash of Kings that well. Was gripping here though and I appreciate the fact that they toned down the sex.
Last year, we'd have gotten that monologue over moaning whores in the background. This year, it was in a private room, and the background sound was silence. They've learned from their mistakes. Yay team.

* Theon Greyjoy. You know what? I actually like him better here than I did in Clash of Kings. He drove me nuts in Clash of Kings, whiny! I think I skimmed most of his chapters, this would explain why I can't remember any of his story. (Note I have not read all of Feast of Crows or any of Dance of Dragons, so do not know what happened to Theon.)

Curious...is his sister introduced this early in the books? Also they appear to have changed her name. Wasn't it Asha? Here it appears to be Arra. I may have misheard. Note to self used close-captioning. (I missed dialogue too in places.)

Loved that bit with his sister - who he treats like a whore he can fuck on the ride up to the castle, not recognizing her. And he doesn't take seriously. Balon Greyjoy actually is interesting in that he gives the sister power. And the sister is actually tougher than Theon. Felt almost sorry for him. He wanted to help Rob Stark, his intentions were actually honorable here, unfortunately his family isn't playing along.

You begin to see the mess Ned made by putting everything in question. He was oblivious to what was happening around him.

* Cersei's comment...regarding the Wildling King..."How many Kings does that make it now?
Seven? I've lost track." LOL!

* Dany who is struggling in the desert juxtaposed neatly with Jon Snow who is struggling in the icy north. And yes, my favorite character in the icy north continues to be Sam.

Jon: If you steal her from him, he'll cut off your hand or worse.
Sam: I can't steal her, she's a person, not a goat.

Thank you.

* Davros and the Pirate were more entertaining than I remember. Rather like the pirate.
Although I agree with Davros kid, it's unlikely he's going to seduce Cersei. She has a thing for blonds.

Davros speech about not believing in gods and only men, was interesting, and a steady theme throughout the series. Worth noting that George RR Martin is a recovering Catholic.
Or non-practicing Roman Catholic, with agnostic tendencies.

I love the actor playing Davros. Don't know where I've seen him before. Also who is Julian Glover playing? Saw his name in the credits.

* Melisandra and Stannis's sex scene was also creepy. Actually everything about Stannis is creepy. But he was creepy in the books too. Not quite sure why Davros is devoted to him.

*Loved, loved...the Ayra and Gendry scenes. Good rapport. Also Gendry's warning to her not to ask so many questions. Maisie Williams is the other stand-out performer in this series, such expressive eyes. The casting of Ayra is amazing.

Not much else to comment on. Going to bed, oddly exhausted. Yet have done little. Thinking may be issues with how I am sleeping? Need to stop blogging late at night. Oh well.

Anyhow...good episode. Held my attention. Mileage may vary, often does.

And methinks, I need new Game of Thrones icons.

Theon's sister is now Yara.

Julian Glover is playing Maester Pycelle.

So did I. Very disturbing chat. Also quite descriptive of Littlefinger.
