1. Breaking Bad - well this is turning out to be a novel for television. It feels more and more like a modern day telling of MacBeth (which by the way, Alan Cumming is doing one may performance of at Lincoln Center for a limited engagement. He's portraying a lunatic in a psychiatric facility who performs MacBeth - all the roles in the play, as a one-person performance. Tempting but can't afford.)
Co-worker is pleased I'm enjoying it. I've managed to convince him to rent The Wire - which is about the closest he'll ever come to the same thing. We debate BB and Mad Men. He is right about Mad Men - it is unevenly written, but I still like the characters better. Although have to admit there's not a great deal of difference between drug dealers and evil marketing/advertising people, except well for the killing part.
Do have a question for Breaking Bad watchers? Is the S4 episode "Bug" important? It's in S4 and my DVR didn't tape it because stupid Time Warner decided to upgrade the system at the same time it was supposed to be taped. So I'm trying to decide if it is worth a rental from netflix or if I can find it online? Not quite there yet. I'm in mid-season 3, Hank just got out of surgery, it's two episodes after Sunset.
2. Mark Watches - I'd probably be enjoying his take more if I was a huge Willow fan or Willow/Tara fan. But neither the character nor the relationship have held up well for me with age. Don't misunderstand - I don't dislike the characters, not at all, I just don't care any more at least not the way I used to. Lost interest. The only character from that series that I seem to still care about for some reason or other is Spike. I don't know why. Unfortunately, Mark doesn't share my interest, so as a result I'm finding his recent posts somewhat dull and uninteresting. Yes, I scan them for Spike mentions, like I scan all Buffy related posts for Spike mentions. If Spike isn't mentioned? Bored now...and I meander on. Someday, I'll probably lose interest in Spike too...just hasn't happened yet.
That said? I was tempted to respond to his post on All the Way - when he asked what the fandom ship name for Buffy/Spike was? I so wanted to give him a run-down of all the romantic ships in the Buffy fandom, just the names - let him figure out who they are.
But figured someone else probably already did that...and well, I'm paralyzed with not caring very much. Okay, that's why I still like Spike - he got the best lines in all the Whedon shows, period. Or at the very least, the most memorable.
Here's what I would have posted to Mark:
Rundown of all the shipping names in Buffy fandom that I can think of off the top of my head, in no particular order and with no explanation - also no spoilers since a lot of these existed before or regardless of the characters being paired. Also - please note, people were shipping Buffy/Spike in S2 but it should be noted that they were also shipping Buffy/Willow, Willow/Spike, Angelus/Willow and Angelus/Buffy.
Spangle, Spuffy, Spillow, Spander, Spara or Tike, Spawn, Spandrew, Spaith, Sprue, Sparla,
Sponner or Cike, Sped or Frike, Spunn, Spwesley, Spiles, Spiley or Rike, Cordike, Sparmony,
Spanya
Bangle, Billow, Bander, Biles, Biley, Banya, Bfred, Bunn, Cangle or Bordila, Barla, Bonner,
Bara, Wangle,
Wara, Wander, Wuffy or Billow, Wilesly, Wunn, Wordila, Warmony, Wrue, Warla,
Basically dude, in fandom? Everyone has been shipped with each other. The sky's the limit.
And if you think the Buffy fandom is a bit incestuous and/or odd regarding some of these pairings, check out Supernatural and ahem, Harry Potter. Traditional ships or canon ships be damned, the more interesting fanfic is about the non-canon ones.
3. Have decided there are more obnoxious trolls on Good Reads than in the Buffy online fandom, which I never thought I'd say. You'd think people would be more careful. Remind me to snatch my pic off that forum. Already made sure it doesn't update to Facebook any more.
Can thank the Momster for the heads up - she told me it was doing it last night. (Oh god, how embarrassing. If you knew who is on my Facebook. Ugh.)
Also must stay off controversial discussion threads that attract insane trolls. There are actually people out there who have enough time on their hands to read three 500-300 page books, which they despise, just to attack the die-hard fans of those books. Can you imagine? How pathetic. I mean...considering the people who are struggling to survive in my work place, I just find that to be pathetic.

Date: 2012-07-13 10:27 pm (UTC)I hate the term Spuffy. But it is better than Bangle or Spander or Spesely.
So I can't complain too loudly. ;-)
Spangle actually is my favorite of the terms. It's actually a word, I think.

Date: 2012-07-13 10:37 pm (UTC)I'm just past the point in which Gus has slaughtered the Tuco cartel, yay, Gus. I really like the actor portraying Gus (he plays the Mirror in Once Upon a Time).
I've been having on-going debates with my co-worker regarding which is better Mad Men or Breaking Bad. He's right now quite happy that I've finally caved and agreed Breaking Bad is the better written series. Co-worker despises Mad Men and was coaxed into watching it by a friend. I've managed to nudge him into trying the Wire - which I think he'll like better than Mad Men.

Date: 2012-07-14 12:30 pm (UTC)I think BrBa is much better than MM but I've always found Mad Men to ve overrated (I really enjoyed the last season though). BrBa is just so well written, but also so wonderfully shot and acted that it is hard to top or even equal. And I say that despite my mad love for Deadwood...

Date: 2012-07-14 05:25 pm (UTC)Until that episode it was hard for me to understand why people were so fannish about this series...yes, it was well structured and tight, and wonderfully layered but so are a lot of things. But that episode...resonated on a deep layer.
I laughed my head off during it, and then was terribly moved. For the first time, I felt sympathy for Walt Whiteman, I liked him. I felt his pain.
I've been wondering lately about what makes something enjoyable to another person. What works and what doesn't. We throw around the words great writing but they've lost their meaning.
Mad Men...see, it depends on what intrigues you personally? I enjoy Mad Men because the character of Peggy resonates for me. My co-worker hates this character. Thinks she is a piranha. For me, Mad Men does an excellent job of depicting the chauvinistic practices and attitudes in American culture - which are still to this day distributed and reinforced through marketing and advertising. It shows rather well how white men angst about and maintain their power base in urban environments. That's why I enjoy it. My co-worker and father can't stand it - see it as little more than a soap opera. My brother loves the artistic direction. To each their own.

Date: 2012-07-14 05:39 pm (UTC)"Fly" is the best BB episode IMO, but some fans actually hate it. If you are interested in reading my thoughts, here is the review I wrote two years ago after seeing the episode for the first time (I was super excited!):

It is an amazingly brilliant episode.
Re: Mad Men - yes, if you hate soap operas, you'll have issues. Everyone I know who doesn't like soaps, can't abide Mad Men. There are a few who like soaps that can't deal with it for the dark subject matter. It's getting relatively easy for me to figure out what shows to recommend to whom now...LOL!
