Dexter definitely improves as the season moves forward. The first episode had issues but I've liked the later ones.

Particularly the comparison of Brother Sam to Professor Geller and how different each view of God and religion is. It's perhaps the most balanced examination of religion and morality that I've seen to date. Normally - the writer goes to extremes. So pleasantly surprised on this bit. Sam tells Dexter that its human nature to believe in something greater than oneself, or to follow something, whether that be science, faith in a divine entity, or what have you. And people do tend to use that to rationalize or justify their acts. People use a lot of things to rationalize what they do, religion just being one of them. Doesn't make religion in of itself wrong. He also states that you have to forgive, not for the other person, but for yourself, you have to let go of the hate and anger inside you - it will not let go of you.

Which is interesting in of itself, but also cleverly depicted...through his relationships with his brother (the darkness inside him) and his adopted father (the light). As well as
with his relationship to Jonah, the son of the Trinity Killer. This season reflects back on both S4 and S1, which is of the good.

Debra's arc is still my main reason for watching the series. And it is progressing. Although, I liked Deb with Quinn, but at least they didn't kill him off. And how they ended it was in character for both - Quinn was using Debs to fill an emptiness in his life and himself, and Debs was doing much the same thing. Neither are ready for commitment.

So it's actually better than the first episode lead me to believe. Slow in places, but that's Dexter.
