shadowkatPicked up a rather wonderful cookbook on my walk today.
Tender: a cook and his vegetable patch by Nigel Slater
It has lovely photos, easy to read recipes, simple as well and not too many hard to find ingredients - a rarity. Plus entertaining read, with great photos.
May have to get it for sisinlaw for Xmas. Sisinlaw is ridiculously hard to buy for, as is bro. We just keep giving each other books every year.
Watched the first three out of four discs for Dexter S6, which is a lot better than I was lead to believe. I actually like S6 better than S5. Deb, La Guerita, and Batista's arcs are far more interesting and better developed. As is Dexter's. Also the plot fits together better. Plus there's a twist that I should have seen coming but caught me completely by surprise, I was fooled by Colin Hanks and Edward James Olmos. Well done.
Not at all what I expected. From reviews - I was expecting preaching, and loose writing, and wonkiness. But it's actually one of the tighter seasons. Reminds me a lot of Angel.
My favorite exchange is between Dexter and unbeknowest to Dexter, his admirer and Mancuzo's intern.
The intern is dating Batista's sister, mainly to get close to Dexter - who she is baby-sitting for. He is developing a video game - he shows it to Jamie, the baby-sitter, stating it's just about being a homicide detective. When he shows it to Dexter, however, he comes clean and states it is about playing at being a serial killer or homicidal killer.
You can even pick which one...Jeffrey Dahlmer, Jack the Ripper, The Bay Butcher...
Dexter is appalled.
Dexter:This is offensive.
Intern: It's just for fun. Nothing serious.
Dexter: Fun? Why would anyone want to be a serial killer? Do you have any idea what it is like to take a life?
Intern: Hey, it's just role playing. An idea I had.
Dexter: Well, it's a bad idea. Do something else.
Nice dig at violent video games and rather comical.
Anyhow, goes to show you that you really can't trust reviews of entertainment or art or cultural items. They are so bloody subjective. Just got to go by what interests you. A good review will give you just enough information to determine if the cultural item appeals to you or not. It shouldn't spoil you. It should give you just a taste of it.
Like sampling a cookie or a cake or any piece of food - a taste test. That's what a good review is - a taste test.
Speaking of cultural items, was also rather impressed by Copper another show that was a lot better than the critics lead me to believe. I can see why Roush didn't like it.
It's atmospheric, a bit slow in places, and more interested in the time period and the slow build. But it did surprise me, and it takes a lot to surprise me.
It airs on BBC America on Sunday nights, repeated on Sat's after Doctor Who. By Barry Levinison and Tom Fontana (of Homicide Life on the Streets fame). Focuses on three men, friends from the Civil War, who have come home to NYC in the waning years of the War and Lincoln's presidency. 1864 or thereabouts. Don't remember the exact date, so don't quote me on that, I never remember dates. The three men are Kevin Cockran, (I think Robert) Morehouse, and Freeman. Kevin Cockran is the cop and central character of the story, Morehouse is a wealthy merchant who has to deal with a power hunger father, and Freeman is a black surgeon. The action takes place in Little Five Points in NYC. It's gritty and there's a fine attention to detail. Everyone is dirty. Nudity. Graphic scenes. And the protagonist does do a few questionable things - so nice and gritty, with a healthy dose of edginess.
Not your typical historical piece. First episode is a bit slow, but the second was quite good. Decided to watch it. I'm taping it at midnight on Sundays. Sunday's are bloody crowded. We three-four tv shows literally on at the same time. One has to shuffle things around a bit.

Date: 2012-09-09 01:50 pm (UTC)I think a lot of people had problems with Deb discovering she was in love with Dexter, her brother. And hated La Guerita becoming Deb's adversary, breaking up La Guerita and Batista. But I felt both were in character, more so than in past seasons. Guerita was always more about politics and her career - everyone else be damned. Her arc actually made sense for once, and I liked the twist where she uses Deb to get rid of Matthews.
Copper is pretty gritty. And a bit slow in places, you have to focus on it.
