Just finished watching tonight's ONCE and have a few theories...

* So Rumplestilskin is the Crocodile in the tale of Peter Pan? I'm beginning to think Bayfeur may end up being Peter Pan. The Eternally Young Lost Boy. Which is the height of irony - Captain Hook was created by his love for the woman who left behind her son and hubby for him. Love creates a villain. So both Cora and Hook want to get to Storybrook to get vengeance on Rumplestilskin and The Evil Queen.

* And I'm wondering from the previews if Doctor Whale may be Doctor Frankenstein. That's where I remember the name "Whale" from...troubled Director James Whale who did the old films Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Dracula.

Also is it just me or do the villains spend a lot of time removing people's hearts and crushing them? Rumple seems to have started it - so maybe he taught Cora and The Evil Queen.

Of course if Bayfleur is Peter Pan - that sort of kills the whole theory that he is Henry's Dad. So...that leaves that one wide open. Can't be both...or can he?

I rather like Hook. Interesting villain.

Oh read an article on ONCE UPON A TIME in EW...apparently the writers like flipping or playing with classic versions of villains. They think for example, Captain Hook was misunderstood. And yes, we are jumping to other worlds...any story is game for this.
The Jungle Book, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, OZ, Neverland..

We will find out this year the following things:

* We'll learn the identity of young Henry's mysterious absent father
* which mythological character Dr. Whale is in fairy-tale land
* who's playing Wonderland's Queen of Hearts
* What happens when a regular person from our world stumbles into Storybrooke.

Apparently there's a fan base already for Captain Hook portrayed by Irish Actor Colin O'Donguhuewho call themselves the Hookers. And the actor has been promoted to series regular already.

In the pilot last season - Charming was supposed to die, but the network execs, much like they did with LOST's Jack, nixed it. They are behind what the writers are doing and very supportive, but there have been a few battles. One that the writers won - was the empowered Snow White pulling out a sword. But the move to kill Charming in the first episode was vetoed.

The reaction from the network executives was unanimous: 'You cannot do this, you've taken away any chance of this show having a happy ending.'

I give the show credit for continuously shaking things up and trying new things. It's the only tv show that I know that does that. Everything else is playing it a bit too safe.
(Sorry in this day and age being violent and cynical is not taking risks. Everybody does that. And the anti-hero bit is getting old.) That's another thing that surprised people..
the optimism.

Once Upon a Time is the most optimistic drama on television. Maybe that's why the TV industry is so stunned when it also became broadcast's top-rated new drama last year, averaging 11.8 million viewers. The series returned similarily strong numbers last month with an average of 14.5 million people...tuning in to the fairy-tale mash-up at a time when many other returning shows experienced declines.

Adds Kitsis (one of the shows creators): "In today's world, everything is cynical. To be cool is to be cynical and s---on everything. We wanted to make a show for believers. We knew some people would be like, 'Why are you being positive? It doesn't mean you can't be dark. It just means the show is not bleak."

* What I liked was Emilia was not kidnapped by Hook, she's not a damsel in distress. Rumple didn't have to save her. She ran off with Hook. Fell in love with his bravery and sense of adventure. And felt trapped in her marriage with Rumple and with her son.
She pays for this, when Rumple rips out her heart and crushes it.

* Belle unfortunately is a bit of a damsel character. But she does stand up to both men and requests to be permitted to make her own choices. Give her credit fro that.

Most of the focus was on Rumple this episode, with just a bit on Charming. Each episode seems to revolve around the four/five leads. One focuses on Snow/Charming/Emma, another on Regina, and another on Rumple. But we are getting new characters added which helps greatly.

Liked this episode a lot better than last week's, mostly because it was surprising. And the guest actors were a lot better.

Plus the twist of having Rumplestilskin be The Crocodile in The Peter Pan story was inspired. It really works on a metaphorical level. These guys are having a blast playing with metaphors.

I enjoyed this episode, but of course I always enjoy the ones that center on Rumplestiltskin/Mr.Gold.... I really liked their choice for Captain Hook, he was great casting... and of course I laughed out loud when Rumplestiltskin said 'tick tock' to Hook.
