Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
Let your heart be light,
From now on our troubles
Will be out of sight.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on our troubles
Will be miles away.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years
We all will be together
If the Fates allow,
Hang a shining star
On the highest bough,
And have yourself
A merry little Christmas now.
Original Version
Songwriters: MARTIN, HUGH / BLANE, RALPH
Have yourself a merry little christmas
Let your heart be light
Next year all our troubles will be
Out of sight
Have yourself a merry little christmas
Make the yule-tide gay
Next year all our troubles will be
Miles away
Once again as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Will be near to us once more
Someday soon, we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then, well have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little christmas now.

Original was "have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last".
But garland,Tom drake and the director Vincent Minnelli all argued it was too depressing and must be changed. Good thing too, the second version was a little less movie specific.

Date: 2012-12-26 09:04 pm (UTC)I had no idea that Frank Sinatra was the one who requested the change "Hang a shining star upon the highest bow" In fact I'm not sure I've ever heard his version.
