2. Rush by Maya Banks - sigh. So..not worth the price. While initially compelling, the writer wrote herself into a corner and the whole story fell apart at the end. The characters and plot in other words stopped making sense.
I've come to two, actually make that three, conclusions:
* Do not trust five star Amazon reviews or Good Reads either for that matter - clearly the people are either paid-off by the writer/publisher or smoking something. Not sure which. I'm getting in the habit of reading the one-three star reviews before making a decision. (BTW - both fresne and masq's books on Amazon do not have any reviews below three-five stars. Yes, I checked.)
* The much maligned contemporary romance - erotica genre is much aligned for a very good reason. You know there's a big problem with a particular genre when the best written - character and plot-wise at any rate, not to mention only one with some semblance of a sense of humor, is ahem, 50 Shades of Grey. Granted some of the others are more adeptly written in that they follow the Chicago Manual of Style and 50 Shades doesn't. But other than that...
* Can't trust the best-seller lists. Not that you ever could. But there were moments. I'm starting to think if you make the best-seller list - there's at least a 75% chance that your novel is pulp.
I'll either go back to GRRM, I'm bogged down in another Jon Snow chapter - this character doesn't compel me quite as much as he appears to compel everyone else. Or read the Ilona Andrews book I picked up - Magic Bites, or I'll try 40 Shades of Pearl - which is apparently about a 40 year old female divorcee who hooks up with a hot billionaire male 25 year old. As opposed to the opposite way around. That's a rarity.
