Big Bang Theory was hilarious this week. Syfy channel cancelled Alphas and Sheldon is extremely frustrated, meanwhile Penny is trying to figure out the boys obsession with tv shows.

Sheldon explaining his frustration: They need to help the audience let go of the show. They can't just cancel it off-hand like that. We need a sense of closure. For example - Firefly got a movie. Buffy got a comic book series. And Heroes just went down in quality year to year until we didn't care any longer.

Penny and Bernadette are obviously watching Buffy. The theme song is in the background.

Penny: I don't get why he loves this show so much.
Bernadette: Well, you know that instead of the monsters killing the little girl, the little girl is killing the monsters, right?
Penny (clearly unimpressed): Oh, so it's the opposite. Whoopee.

I've had this exact same conversation with so many people, I've lost count.

Hee yes I could soo emphasise with Sheldon's horror at his tv show ending on a cliffhanger and something must be done about this. And same with Leonard being so excited at showing Penny a show that he was convinced she would love, and then the bafflement at how anyone couldn't like this show (I'm experiencing that now with one of my friends not being that keen on Breaking Bad. She's currently halfway through season 2 and complaining about finding a lot of it boring, and I just don't get how anyone couldn't be won over by the pilot alone!) Plus it's awkward if you've really been gushing over the show and over-selling it lol

I never start newbies on the first episodes of Bts though, that was Leonard's first mistake! I always carefully select what episode might appeal to them the most, and then go back to the beginning. I would probably have started Penny off with Surprise/Innocence as I get the feeling she would have liked following all of the relationship drama between B/A in those episodes and Buffy's heartbreak at her boyfriend changing personality after they sleep together. Penny's had a lot of bad boyfriends herself, right?

Regarding Breaking Bad? The pilot and first Season is great. The Second Season is...crappy up until the last two or three episodes. I got really bored in the second season and stopped watching.
A co-worker talked me into starting it up again, so I started about halfway through the second-season, where I left off, pushed my way through and suddenly in S3 it took off like a bandit and became brilliant.

The Fly - S3 episode, was the one that sold me on Breaking Bad.

Agreed. That was what I was thinking..."Leonard, you dope, you start people on S1 Buffy, they'll think you're nuts for loving it." But it is in character for Leonard to have done it that way - he's a bit anal, and would have felt she'd have to start at the beginning.
Raj would have started her with Surprise/Innocence. Or School Hard.
Actually School Hard would have been a good place to introduce her to the series.

For me? I had a friend who didn't get my love of the series until they saw "The Body".

I didn't have the same reaction to season 2 as you did, but I did like season 1 a LOT more and it's one of my favourites, so I'm always surprised at anyone not being hooked after the pilot. I've actually seen a lot of people talking about season 1 being a boring season to get through which always surprises me, IMO it's one of the most interesting seasons for Walt's character as you get to see him first decide to become Hisenberg, and the first time he's confronted with having to take a life

ETA And yeah Penny would probably have enjoyed School Hard too as Spike and Dru are a good intro for Bts. I remember when I first watched the pilot I switched off after a bit as it seemed like such a cliched kind of show with Buffy meeting the bitchy new girl, then the sweet shy girl, and the traditional horror movie antics with the one-dimensional Master etc. I would have been much more interested if I had started with season 2 as Spike and Dru help mark the series out as something a bit different, and Spike is a character that a lot of people get interested in following right away
