shadowkatAnother hot steamy day. The weather is wonky, it is hotter in Boston than in Miami. (Or...another example? The temperature in Texas is 70 degrees (about the teens in C), and 93 degrees in NYC (think 40s in C). Very weird. The South is wondering what happened to the summer, and the northeast is thinking, damn it is hot, but winter is worse, while the west is thinking - okay enough already - winter any day now, please.
So there's a petition on Face Book about the Federal Government going after Zimmerman on a Civil Rights Action. But here's the thing about Civil Rights Cases - there's a very high burden of proof for a hate crime, second jurisdiction. They are better off spending their time and energy going after The Stand Your Ground legislation, just as they'd be better off going after Stop and Frisk legislation. As a co-worker stated...so who has the right to stand their ground exactly? Didn't Trayvon Martin have the right to stand his ground? The law is discriminatory on its face and should be ruled unconstitutionally and removed. Now that would open up Zimmerman to a host of civil law suits.
Pleasure for Pleasure, the book I've been reading, is charming. Except for one character named Sylvie who I keep wanting to smack upside the head. But she's supporting, so it hardly matters.
True Blood was better last week than the previous week. I sort of like Marlow, he has potential. Rutger Hauer was silly. Tara is under-used. I preferred her the last two seasons.
Jason continues to be a nitwit and it is getting old. The only characters that appear to have advanced are Bill, Eric, Sookie, Sam and Jessica. Everybody else is more or less stuck in a rut. Also Alcide's storyline continues to suck beans. I didn't like the character in the books either...he's pretty here, but no more appealing. That said? I'm hanging in there, unlike most people apparently. It's silly, but fun in places.

This is so even if safety could have been achieved by retreating."
I go back and forth on whether these laws are a good idea. The common law required you to retreat if possible, and there are good arguments for that. But I believe all 50 states have changed the law to rule it out now. So while Zimmerman is a scumbag, the problem is not with FL law per se.
ETA: Very much agree on stop and frisk. That's an outrage and it's subject to serious abuse on a very large scale.

Date: 2013-07-17 01:46 am (UTC)Sigh. Another group of out-dated laws that made sense 100 years ago, but do not make sense now. Just like the right to bear arms made sense in 1776 but not so much now. Now? It's a dangerous right and cons outweigh the pros. Back then...well, you sort of needed muskets to hunt, fend off predators, and deal with general lawlessness.
But people think guns protect them. Guns don't protect anyone, well not unless you happen to reside in a zombie movie...then maybe.

Date: 2013-07-18 02:30 am (UTC)Not to mention poorly written. I liked last week's better. There is, oddly chemistry between Sookie and Warlow. Which is odd. More than with Bill, who the actress is married to.
I preferred Bill last season. Now, he's a bit on the silly side.
Do you think they'll kill off Eric or PAm? Eric does have a movie career...but if they kill him off they could lose what is left of their watchers. I doubt that many people are watching for Bill.

I'm not sure about Pam. I hope they don't kill her. I like the character. Plus, poor Tara if they do.
