Emmy's and other stuff..

1. Thinking of doing Yea or Nay polls on new TV shows...to see what the lj flist consensus is. But do I have the time? Also how to do without spoiling myself? I often watch these shows long after everyone else does. Not much time during the week.
2. Emmy's were boring. And a little out there. Although I don't pay that much attention to them anyhow - for several reasons. 1) The people who vote on them are actors, directors, and television writers - who don't really watch tv. (I mean come on, after a hard day at the office do you want to do anything that reminds you of it? I think not. If they watch it's usually DVD binge watching or netflix streaming - and long after series has ended. This is why THE WIRE was ignored.) 2) They don't vote on the series as a whole or the actor's performance throughout the series, but one the "episode reel" that the actors or tv show submit for appraisal. It's not like the Oscars. I mean consider this for a minute - tv series tend to be between 11-22 episodes long. Do you have time to watch EVERY tv series out there? (Unless you happen to be a television critic.) So highlights are submitted. They vote on a highlighted performance. 3) It's not possible to compare some of these performances, they are playing completely different roles with different writing. Sure if we were comparing five actress's portrayal of Lady MacBeth, but how do you compare Lady MacBeth to Helena to Viola to Roslinde to Juliet? You end up comparing the characters NOT the performances. 4) I always forget whoever wins.
That said? Aaron Paul, Jonathan Banks, Kevin Spacey, the lead of Scandal whose name suddenly escapes me, and Bryan Cranston were robbed. Jeff Daniels so did not deserve it for the Newsroom ( I tried to watch that series), and from what I've read - Boardwalk Empire doesn't deserve anything but awards for set design and cinematography. Oh well at least Girls didn't win anything. Wish Big Bang Theory got Best Comedy - it deserves an emmy. It's the only comedy I've watched that consistently makes me laugh.
But like I said above, hard to take it seriously. I agree with Woody Allen who refuses to participate in these things and ignores them. You can give awards to the winner of a race, but tv shows, books, and movies aren't race horses. It's subjective - there is no way you can objectively and legitimately pick a winner or state one is the best. All you can do is say which is your favorite or turned you on or blew you away depending on your mood or what you need at the time.
On the performances? Why pick Carrie Underwood of all people to do a Beatles Tribute???
I understood the others. I missed Elton John's tribute to Liberace, and Michael J. Fox.
The performances on these things always feel sort of thrown together - I'm guessing that's the intent?
3. How I Met Your Mother was actually enjoyable tonight, if annoying in places. But I have to say - the train they used looks nothing like the Long Island Rail Road. Actually I've never seen any train that looked like that set.
I like the mother. Although she is a brunette "Lily".

However, I do not understand all the anti-Jeff Daniels stuff I'm seeing all over the place. As far as I'm concerned he was outstanding in the first season on Newsroom.
And he is an actor I've not haad much time or before now.
