Admittedly was thinking of passing on X-Men: Days of Future Past (because it is amongst my favorite story arcs in X-Men comics, basically the same reason I skipped Wolverine this summer - which was another of my favorite comic book arcs). BUT...the cast is amazing. We have Peter Dinklage (aka Tyrion from Game of Thrones) playing Bolivar Trask. Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart returning as future Magneto and Prof X, and Fasbbender and McAvoy as the younger versions, plus Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. And it is amongst the best story arcs in the X-Men Canon.
Actually my favorite X-men story arcs tended to be written by the team of Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. (I was NOT a fan of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby - nor am I fond of fan faves Grant Morrison - who retconed the series in the 21st century, or Joe Quesada, and Warren Ellis.)
I honestly think Claremont was the only writer who understood Wolverine, Magento, Phoenix, and Cyclops. Whedon and Morrison ripped away everything that made Wolverine interesting.
And the movies destroyed Scott Summers/Cyclops. If you were a fan of the Jean Grey/Scott Summers tale or liked Cyclops - the movies were tailor made to annoy.
I've always been disappointed in animated and live action adaptations of comic books. I think the reason is I have higher expectations than I do with novel adaptations. Mainly because a comic - is told with pictures. You have the storyboard. Also it's short. So unlike adapting a novel - you don't have to cut stuff out, actually you can add stuff and do more, nor do you have to worry about what the characters should look like or how they should be costumed, ect - it's right there on the page. So I sort of expect the live action/animated version to be what I read. When it varies "too far" from that I get a little annoyed. It's weirdly the only transference that I'm picky about.
But, this adaptation has two things going for it, one - I can no longer clearly remember the original story (I read it over 20 years ago), and two - great cast. Although the lack of Jean and Scott and Kitty Pryde, who featured heavily in the original normally would have annoyed me. The movie writers clearly didn't like those characters.
2. Feeling better today, but still slightly crappy. Felt faint after squatting to collect mail, mainly the EW mag that told me about the above (See #1). So decided to forgo Church today. Therapist and my Auntie M, told me that it probably wasn't an allergic reaction, but my system struggling to deal with changes in diet and the addition of new healthier fiber all at once. In short, I need to cut back, not cut out. Also need to do exercises that PT gave me. Leg was bugging me a bit today. Could be the severe change in weather. Went from 70s to 40s.
3. Kindle is having a sale. So I picked up books on the cheap last night prior to going to bed.
* Slaughter House 5 by Kurt Vonnegurt - on sale for $1.99
* Tin Drum by Gunter Grass - with new translation that includes the writer's original notes and is unabridged, also on sale for $1.99
* Fan Girl - by Rainbow Rowell - for $1.49 (this is the girlgeek version of Ready Player One with a focus on fanfic writing and fan forums. I may like it better, because again, not a fan of videogames and old computers. In short I'm not that kind of geek.)
* One for the Heart by Johanna Lindsey for $1.99
Was quite impressed by the sale. They also apparently have Game Change and Bringing Up the Bodies on sale for $1.99.
As you can see from reading the above, I'm as weirdly eclectic in my reading choices as I am in everything else. This makes it hard to choose. When you basically like to read, watch and listen to EVERYTHING, it's very hard to choose or limit your options. I do go on binges occasionally. I am admittedly a binge eater and binge cultural consumer.
4. Hee...even EW admits The Good Wife is the best thing on right now. It's also completely dropped the case of the week bit - and become serialized. Now it's a competition between two firms that hate each other. Also they completely fixed the Kalinda storyline.
Yay!
Not looking forward to tonight's OUAT, because it's about the Little Mermaid. And, looks campy as hell from the previews. They've even brought forward Ursula. Really? There better be a twist - it better not be an exact live-action replica of the animated film - acting as an ad for Disney. I watch lots of television on ABC, so I see previews for up-coming episodes.

Date: 2013-11-03 06:37 pm (UTC)I'm actually really psyched for OUaT tonight, because it's been a while since we got a full from-the-ground-up OUaT version of a classic fairy tale, and not just elements popping up in other backstories. I've also been eager to see their spin on it ever since Regina's line about working out a deal with a mermaid, in "Skin Deep".

RE: X-men? They are bringing back Ellen Page as Kitty? Cool. She's central to that story arc.
Kitty had one of the best story arcs in the comics...during the Claremont era.
