Learned today that there is such a thing as a "Track Laying Machine" and it basically picks up the tracks from another machine and lays the track. Only costs 6 million.
Lots of fun machines on the railroad. Probably yours picks up the old track, lays it to the side and while the whole thing is still moving, lays the new track (in very long pieces) in time for the rest of the work train to roll over it. I've seen a video of one in action and it's still hard to imagine exactly how it works!
