Received my EW mag today, it actually required me hunting for it - because whomever picked up the mail from the floor (everything falls through the same mail slot onto the floor or a basket) and sorted it on the little cart, decided to throw the mag in with the endless pile of catalogues and junk. (Annoying.) So I almost missed it. And considering it's the only thing I enjoy getting in the mail...
Anywho...they have a chart of the top broadcast tv series with the highest ratings this fall.
What is interesting about it - is I watch maybe 10% of the series in the top 60? And several which are up there...boggle my mind. What the hell, people? Seriously, what the hell? Do you just wander about with it on in the background?
1. NCIS (this actually makes sense - everyone I've met over the age of 60 is in love with this series. My parents adore it. It frankly puts me to sleep. But to each their own.)
2. The Big Bang Theory (no argument, although I've placed it on hiatus - because its opposite Vamp Diaries and OUAT: Wonderland).
3. NCIS: Los Angeles (according to my mother this isn't that good. I'm not a fan of Scott O'Donnell...so there's that.)
4. The Voice (okay, the American Idol effect?)
5. Person of Interest (makes more sense to me than NCIS - it didn't put me to sleep.)
6. The Black List (I actually watch this one, but had no idea it was doing THAT well. Probably because of the Voice, which was like American Idol back in the day - anything airing after it, does well. It's okay, but I agree with the critics, it's becoming a bit tired and needs to mix things up a bit and reveal a few more secrets.)
7. Dancing with the Stars (similar to the Voice)
8. The Voice (at a different time slot. Know a lot of people at work who adore this. I've seen it - do not understand the appeal. Found it to be grating, personally.)
9. Castle (hmmm...haven't people gotten bored yet? There's only so many ways they can solve murder mysteries and flirt? )
10. 60 Minutes (over 40 years and still going strong, course it doesn't really have any competition on Sundays...)
11. Blue Bloods (what the hell? The pilot put me to sleep.)
12. Criminal Minds (how long has this been on now? 10 years? But hey, more interesting than some others...so makes sense. )
13. Modern Family (it's admittedly funny at times)
14. The Crazy Ones (I've watched it on demand...so I get it.)
15. The Millers (haven't seen it - can't comment)
16. Elementary (actually watch - I'd rank it higher than well the Black List and Castle, but it admittedly is less twisty, and requires a bit more attention, not to mention has a sort of wacky protagonist, so there is that.)
17. Grey's Anatomy (actually watch - but seriously this has been on for 11 years...)
18. CSI (I'm thinking on for 14 yrs? And it has changed its cast twice now. It's like Law and Order, casting can be interchangable, and the Energizer Bunny - you can't kill this series. It will last forever...which makes it a network executive dream tv show.)
19. Two and a Half Men (see CSI. Apparently casting isn't that important? )
- Scandal (I watch - so I get it. Fast-past plotting and great political satire, helps that the anti-heroes are politicians. Politicians make the best anti-heroes.)
21. Hawaii 5-0 (people just love police procedurals don't they? You'd think they'd get bored after a bit - you know seeing the same plot done over and over and over again, but apparently not?)
- Sleepy Hollow (great characters, great cast, and it's weirdly funny in places. Amazed it's this popular actually. So is Fox. By the way it is actually tied with Hawaii 5-0)
23. The Good Wife (too smart to be number one, but with more fans than expected. It's also a procedural but not like any you've ever seen in your lifetime. For one thing? No violence. No murder's. And another - it's become highly serialized. Cases of the week are mainly there to push the other plots forward.)
-Chicago Fire (I admittedly don't get it.)
- Marvel's Agents of Shield (okay been watching, but beginning to wonder why or for that matter why anyone else is. According to EW - it's shedding 40 million viewers a week - so this won't be for long. Do yourselves a huge favor - dump this baby, and go rent the first season of The Good Wife and get caught up. You can thank me later.)
26. Survivor -( still there??? Well they don't call it the idiot box for nothing.)
27. The Mentalist - yet more compelling than NCIS
28. How I Met Your Mother - okay, I'm watching...but, let's just say it's a good thing this is the last season (although not possibly from the network's pov.)
29. The Amazing Race (ugh, I hate this show. Go away! Go away! I see more of it than I want, because it bleeds into The Good Wife - due to Football overtime.)
30. 2 Broke Girls (I understand this.)
31. Once Upon a Time (I'm frankly surprised it's doing this well. Shows like this normally don't. But pleased. Means it will last. Personally think it should be doing better than Shield. People watching SHIELD? Dump it and head over here - more interesting and far more complex characters and plot threads. Also less cliche and pedesterian writing.)
- Bones (how many years now? I think Castle has largely replaced it in people's hearts - Fillion has a bigger fan following, in part because he actually loves the Whedon fandom and goes to conventions.)
33. The Middle (personally, I think it is funnier than Two and a Half Men and Modern Family, but what do I know?)
- Undercover Boss (an admittedly clever reality series about boss' taking on their employees jobs, but undercover.)
35. The X-Factor (The VOICE is beating your butt! YAY!!)
36. Law and Order: SVU (I think this is the only one left. CSI basically took over the audience.)
37. Revenge (still holding strong, although I think it slipped a few spaces)
-MOM (hmmm, if you are a fan this may be a good sign? Don't know it's CBS - they have high standards)
39. Shark Tank (glad this isn't doing that well)
40. Nashville (considering what it is - this is pretty good. A hour long drama with country music and focusing on the country music world, with somewhat soapy plot lines. I like it, but I'm frankly surprised it's doing this well. Although I find it more interesting than Grey's at the moment.)
41. Hostages - okay, that's surprising. Though it was a loser?
42. The X-Factor (hee)
-The Goldbergs (not surprising...although, I admittedly don't get the appeal.)
- Revolution (hmmm)
45. Last Man Standing (no comment)
Back in the Game (critics don't agree on, I haven't seen)
Super Fun Night (critics hate)
48. The Biggest Loser (guess the ratings honeymoon is over?)
49. Glee...(it's days are numbered, one season left)
We Are Men (also hated by critics)
The Simpsons (I honestly think this show will last forever...or until Matt Groening dies.
ratings don't seem to matter. I stopped watching it over 12 years ago.)
52. Ironside (already cancelled - yet The Simpsons and Glee continue, go figure)
53. The Michael J Fox Show (still going, while Ironside is gone, and yes they are on the same channel. MJF should have been better - has a great but wasted cast. Bad writing.)
54. Dateline (hee...it's not 60 Minutes, but also unkillable and yes on NBC, I'd be crying foul if I was Ironside)
55. Family Guy (unkillable - it's like The Simpsons)
-New Girl (hmmm...does this mean it's dead?)
-America's Funniest Home Videos (unkillable - it's been on for 20 years.)
58. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (well if you were worried about them stretching this out for two more seasons, you can stop now. It will stay a closed arc as promised. That said, it is worth noting that this is opposite Big Bang Theory.)
59. 20/20 (also unkillable, yet, clearly not 60 Minutes)
60. Parenthood (okay, Ironside gets cancelled for being in 52nd space, but Parenthood is renewed and given a full season after last year? I like the show, but it's really not for the procedural crowd - no violence, no murders, no melodrama, just a quiet little series about a family.)
Anywho...they have a chart of the top broadcast tv series with the highest ratings this fall.

Date: 2013-11-10 11:37 pm (UTC)Most important points:
"First, consider the fact that last week's episode marked the the sixth consecutive time Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has ranked as Tuesday's number-one show in the key men's 18 to 49 year-old demographic. In fact, season-to-date, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is also currently ranked the number two overall broadcast entertainment series in men 18-49, behind only CBS' long-standing favorite, The Big Bang Theory.
"What's more, ABC says, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also boasts incredible staying power as this season's second-biggest adult 18-49 broadcast gainer in TV playback -- once again trailing only The Big Bang Theory -- while adding 2.1 ratings points, or 62%, from its 'live plus same day' and 'live plus seven day' viewership.
"Finally, to put everything into perspective relative to Disney's previous television standings, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so far has singlehandedly improved its time period for ABC by 105%, and in the process secured its spot as the network's top-rated series for that hour dating all the way back to 2009.
"Not too shabby for a supposedly faltering show whose ratings 'continue to fall.'"

Date: 2013-11-11 02:55 am (UTC)All we need is another show to pop up in that demographic that is more entertaining and better written on an opposing network - which by the way isn't that hard to do. AoS is not exactly setting a high bar to beat here.
Nor is it as well written as Big Bang.
All we need is a football game. Or March Madness. Or the Olympics. And by-by demo.

Date: 2013-11-11 10:51 pm (UTC)It's not going to attract new viewers though. Too hard to follow. But it will keep the nitch Avengers fandom...or fans of the movie franchise, and considering that is a BIG fandom.
No, Marvel: Agents of Shield is just mainstream enough to do quite well. Ironically, if it was just a touch more clever or better written or ironic? It would probably not do that well. It's more or less a standard rule of thumb right now: well-written television series don't tend to do as well as poorly written ones. Which is why, so many people put down television or call it the idiot box. Because poorly written programs get higher ratings than well-written ones.
Perfect example? Buffy was always on the cusp of cancellation. Or Breaking Bad. Or The Wire.
