My First Entry ...RIP Warren Zevon

shadowkatWell never done this before, so we'll see how this works. Yeah, I've posted essays online, posted fic online, but a journal online?? Sounds a tad personal to me, but what the heck.
Currently listening to a CD my friend cjl lent me. Never heard Warren Zevon before, but KdS on the Atpo board (That's All Things Philosophical Board about BTVS and ATS - located at www.atpobtvs.com in case you're interested), wrote this kick-ass review of Zevon recently, so I mentioned an interest and voila! cjl brought the CD's to his birthday party. (Hmmm, should I feel quilty for getting gifts at someone else's birthday party? I also got two books - granted no one really spent any money - they'd read them and were just passing them on and cjl is basically loaning me the CD's...ugh, guilt is my middle name. I swear I'd feel guilty if I stepped on a spider and I'm afraid of the little buggers...;-) ). Interesting music, not really rock so much as folk, I think. Another thing? I actually have heard several of these songs before, actually have some of them on tape (yep those types of cassettes...even heard a couple on 8-Track, yep I'm that old). Apparently others have sung his songs such as Linda Ronstandt and Prince of all people. Very odd to hear someone other than Prince sing Rasberry Berette. Feeling very stupid regarding music at the moment. (The music nerds out there hopefully won't judge me too harshly. But I just have no memory for anything auditory if it doesn't have pictures attached. On the other hand - very broad appreciation for music...pretty much like everything, with very few exceptions. Really loud music turns me off - I need to hear the lyrics, lyrics often move more than sounds although good rhythm and combos can have the same effect, examples? Paul Simon, Beethoven, Mozart, Pink Floyd (particularly Pink Floyd) just to name a few. I also sort of like Nine Inch Nails and Prodigy, which are electronic
music and turn lots of music purists off. No, it's discordant music, all feedback (which is why not always fond of live bands - heard Aimee Mann Live in 2002 and the feedback was atrocious, she sounded so much better on that BTVS episode Sleeper (BTVS stands for Buffy The Vampire Slayer...just in case you're not a fan of the show), or on her CD Lost in Space - but live? Not so much. My friends get off on live music - they like to see the performance...feel the rhythm vibrate through the floor, and I get that, really I do, but I'm so distracted by the crowds and the smoke (well not in NY so much anymore) and the feedback...that I just can't enjoy it. Music is a private thing for me. Always has been, I guess. I listen while I work on the computer, read, or when I go to sleep at night. I use it to relax or just...disappear from the world for a while. Course depends on the music. With Zevon? I think I would have liked to see him in person. His music speaks to me. Like listening to someone telling stories from their soul. Peter Gabriel was like that - best concert I ever saw in my life was in 1987 in London with Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush...that spoke to me. The songs rung true and I knew them inside so sang along, not caring who heard, the music just surrounded you.
And the crowds? Controlled. Sitting in rows. Only bursting up with lighters when Kate Bush took the stage. No feedback and no smoke. Course it was outside at Wembly Stadium which helped. Ahhh...Warren Zevon, Rest in Peace, having only just discovered your music, I miss you already.

Wish I knew more about Warren Zevon. I'm only familiar with a few songs and I agree with you about live music (except for the smoke part, WEG). I much prefer to listen to it in the comfort of my own home.

You might want to let him know he has a fan club and so he can make any necessary plans to leave the country or whatnot. He also has decided he wants to build a particle accelerator now based on some conversation he believes he had with Darby. One sighs.
You might want to ask DS about icon communities. There's two on my friends page also if you want to look at general ones; but, I think there's some buffy icon groups around.

Date: 2003-09-09 07:20 am (UTC)Live music is always such a crapshoot - sound systems go kerplooey, my back gets sore, sometimes the performers are having a bad night - but I keep going for those moments where the private becomes public, when I can look around and recognize the emotions I'm feeling on the faces of strangers and the difference between the song, the singer and the audience doesn't seem to exist anymore. It's rare but it's worth it. Then there are those times when I just want to slam into people so it's useful to have them around. ;)
