TVD (Vamp Diaries) and Justified...
Feb. 9th, 2014 07:42 pmFound both to be a wee bit frustrating...although Justified admittedly had better dialogue and acting, but that sort of goes without saying. Also during Justified, I thought, oh hey, it's Danny Strong playing a misogynistic yet very short guard, and Alan Tudyke playing a hit man...cool. Justified is employing Whedon alums now...you can tell it's on its final legs.
Vampire Diaries
This show likes to repeat itself. Also, I'm not certain I like the current storyline. We'll see. After years of stating that I preferred Katherine to Elena, I've changed my mind.
Okay, so instead of killing off Katherine, Katherine takes over Elena's body (Kenlena) and no one but Matt notices, because they have to compel someone to feed Nadia and Kelena information. Tyler gets suspicious - because he overhears Nadia compelling Matt, but Matt manages to squash his suspicions after Nadia threatens to kill Tyler. (Seriously, Tyler's a hybrid - all he has to do is bit the vampire, and it's curtains.)
Elena attempts to escape the Nadia/Traveler bonding spell - which will place Katherine permanently in Elena's body. But for some reason she doesn't set the traveler and Nadia on fire. I would have killed both of them - stopping the spell. And foiling Katherine's plans.
Plus - vengeance, you killed her daughter. But no...she just stabs Nadia and knocks the witch out - then runs away. Into Damon's arms - but before she can tell him anything, the spell works and Katherine's permanently in charge. We don't know what happened to Elena. My guess is she's still in there and silently watching Katherine take over her life. (I'm starting to find Katherine grating - all she's done this season is whine or bitch.)
Because she wants Stefan and hates Damon, Katherine as Elena, cruelly dumps him. Which sets him off into a destructive down-ward spiral. Prior to her dumping him, unbeknowest to Katherine, who can't see anything outside of herself and her own needs, Damon's old buddy Enzo attempted to get him to on a revenge killing spree against the remaining Whitmore clan.
Damon refused because Elena wouldn't like it. Now, he thinks - screw Elena, I see no reason not to do this and leave town permanently.
Kelena also deep-sixes Caroline's relationship with Tyler. Effectively breaking them up. Without realizing that there is a budding romance brewing between Caroline and Stefan. And Caroline may head in that direction. She so deserves a Caroline/Stefan romance. I'm currently rooting for that development.
Stefan is admittedly worried about Damon. He's so worried, that he is oblivious to what is going on with Kelena, but then he's never been the most observant of vamps. Also she's more or less giving him what he wants...and saying all the things he wants to hear. It's now back to the status quo, Kelena will help him with Damon, not for Damon, but for him - for Stefan, like she did in Season 1-3. Stefan also admits that Elena made Damon a better person, healed him, and he liked his brother better when he was with Elena, that Damon stood by Elena in ways that he never did or could. Kelena could care less...she just wants Stefan and to be adored.
Meanwhile, Damon and Enzo kill Aaron Whitmore, then go after West Whitmore - the mad scientist who wants to turn vampires into well vampire killers. (Not a bad idea. Rather clever actually - if they eat their own kinds, humans are off the menu. So maybe not so mad scientist, well not unless you are a vampire - which practically everyone in the main cast is at the moment.) They kidnap Jeremy in order to get Bonnie to force another budding witch to catch a finding spell. (As an aside, why didn't Bonnie find it odd that Katherine never passed through her when she died? Did she write it off as being because Katherine was cured and died of natural causes?) Which requires Kelena to ironically have to save Jeremy's life against her will (or as Nadia states - someone will figure it out). And then go after West, only to have him give Damon the final dose of the serum, while the travelers who are West's new supporters and back-up knock both vamps unconscious. Now wicked Damon, who doesn't really care about anyone any longer, craves vampire blood. As Damon states to his first victim, the vampire janitor that West has tied up in his lair - "For me? This is Karma."
And it is.
I'm sort of hoping, it means Damon will get to kill Nadia in front of Kelena and almost drain Stefan, but not quite (because they'll never kill Stefan) - because Kelena completely deserves that. So does Nadia. That too would be Karma. I don't like Nadia, I find the character grating.
Why can't this series keep the characters I like and get rid of the grating ones? Oh well, at least Aaron bit it - that character was going nowhere. Who knows...maybe Nadia will be next?
At any rate - they keep flipping Stefan and Damon back and forth. One Season - Damon needs Elena's help to save Stefan from himself, the next it's the opposite. And they've both gone off the deep end because of Elena. Seriously, dudes? Kelena is right - you have to find something else to live for.
Justified
Sluggish in places. I'm admittedly not overly fond of the Crowe clan. But I did find some scenes amusing and gripping. Liked how Boyd Crowder outwitted Mosely, and Raylan outwitted the Detroit Mob. Could have done without the Ava storyline, which frustrated me.
