Okay found some really interesting and subversive adventure/fantasy fairy tale romance novel suggestions at smartbitches site:
This one by the author of Enchanted, entitled Hero is about Saturday who finds herself taken to a far away castle, where she meets a boy named Peregrine, who has been held captive there for years. She hates wearing skirts (they get in her way), is active and into adventure, and Peregrine has been dressed as a girl most of his life, sort of is used to it, and loves dresses - they work better for his lifestyle. Has long hair, because it keeps magically growing. And is patient and not aggressive.
Another is a f/f version of the Persephone myth. Called The Dark Wife. And in it Hades is female, not male. And not the bad guy, Zeus is.
F/f is admittedly not my thing...I don't know why exactly. But I have to admit those are interesting and off the beaten genre path.
