The Fargo season finale is on tonight. Too late for me to watch live, will most likely watch tomorrow. Part of the reason it's so tight is that it had one writer write all the episodes, with the Cohen Brother's blessing.

That said? I had difficulty with last week's episode - the set-up just didn't work. And felt contrived. One of the characters does something insanely stupid - not that this character was the brightest bulb in the planet to begin with - but this was too stupid even for him. And the writer clearly did it - to move the plot in a specific direction, even if the action made little sense and had no clear character motivation behind it.
Ugh, great series except for that bit. It should have ended with the episode directly before it. Left things hanging. Will watch tonight's to see if the writer redeems himself.

Upon recognizing the violent and creepy hitman, Lorne Malvo, who changed his life, Lester decides to approach him. Even though its bluntly obvious that the hitman wants him to go away. And denies knowing who he is. And looks nothing like he did a year before. But Lester decides to pursue him and press the issue. This results in the hitman killing everyone in an elevator except Lester. Then sets up yet another stream of violence, all because Lester stupidly pursued him.

This is fine and dandy. Except why did Lester approach Malvo? He knows how dangerous Malvo is and he's in fact quite terrified of him. You'd think upon recognizing Malvo he'd have run in the opposite direction - which would have made more sense and been a better ending. But no, the writer wants to neatly wrap things up and make a point - so he has Lester do something that is a bit out of character, and makes no sense. It threw out of the story.

So, Fargo, like all television shows is flawed. I don't think I've seen a television series that isn't flawed. (Breaking Bad went on too long - should have ended with Season 4. And The Wire meandered in its 5th season. Buffy was uneven throughout. A lot of people think it should have ended with S5 but I beg to differ, S6 and S7 in some respects were far more interesting theme and character wise and took more risks that the prior seasons. Seasons 1-3 do deserve the title: campy tween series and are great fun to heckle. Seriously? The writers poked fun at it in S3's The Zeppo.) Doesn't feel stretched too thin in places or the plot meanders in others or it has bad pacing. Makes sense. Did you know that certain native american tribes deliberately place flaws in their works of art - in order to appease nature? To honor nature and the universe. I think that's wise. Who are we to improve upon nature.

Should you check out Fargo? Eh. Depends on how much you like the Cohen Brothers films.
