So when it comes to ISBN numbers...which choice is best?

My aim is worry free, send to offline and online sellers. And to academic and library channels. I don't really want to format it for various digital distribution channels.
But, am I hurting myself by choosing the Free Create Space ISBN? Can I, if I choose, just buy a new one at a later date -- if I want to republish the book through other channels?

[Poll #2005878]

I wonder if traditional publishing is this headache inducing. Probably is, just a bit different.

Huh, I didn't even know that there were multiple choices for ISBNs. Interesting.

Yeah. I'm leaning towards the free one - because I really want distribution to Academic and Libraries through Baker & Taylor. I know too many people who only read library books.

Also...truth is, you can always set up a new ISBN - in fact you sort of have to if you have a new publisher pick it up.

I don't remember which option I picked, but I could look it up (did you get my message on Feeb about forwarding IndieBound info to you?) I do know I needed two ISBNs, one for print and one for eBook.

That's why I'm leaning towards doing the free one - it will take care of all my print books and the Kindle on Amazon.

I'll probably have to set up a new ISBN for other digital outlets, should I wish to do it, anyhow.

I sent you my new email address via FB. I'll try by lj too. The earthlink address is inactive, because they were charging me. Gmail is free. MSN is inactive because it was buggy and filled with spam mail.

Won't you be restricted to selling on Amazon?

No, not really. They distribute through Ingrams, other retail outlets, Baker & Taylor, and to Barnes and Noble. (this is under "Expanded Distribution" - which you only qualify for if you have the right ISBN number under "Create Space".) They only "distribute" to just Amazon channels if you pick one of the custom ISBN's. Then you have to go out and distribute to the other or expanded channels yourself via a different imprint or version, I'm guessing.

This what Amazon states under Create Space ISBN:

What is Expanded Distribution?

Expanded Distribution offers you the opportunity to access a larger audience through more online retailers, bookstores, libraries, academic institutions, and distributors within the United States. Expanded Distribution will also improve discoverability of your book across all the channels. Regardless of whether or not you include your title in Expanded Distribution, all CreateSpace titles can be distributed through the Amazon.com, Amazon Europe and eStore channels.

How does it work?

Most online retailers, bookstores, and libraries find books through purchasing relationships with large distributors. If your book is not listed with these distributors, some retailers may not be able to buy your book, even if a customer specifically requests your title. Through Expanded Distribution you can distribute and make your title available for order (this does not guarantee that your book will actually be ordered) through the following channels:

Bookstores and Online Retailers - make your book available to online and offline retailers such as Barnes & Noble and to distributors such as Ingram and NACSCORP.

Libraries and Academic Institutions - make your book available through Baker & Taylor to libraries and academic institutions.

CreateSpace Direct - make your book available to certified resellers through our wholesale website.

CreateSpace is always looking for ways to improve the distribution opportunities for our members so, from time to time, we may add or change the channels available through Expanded Distribution.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To maximize the number of distribution opportunities available, please consult the following table for eligibility requirements by distribution channels. For your reference, this table also includes the eligibility requirements for the Amazon.com, Amazon Europe and eStore channels.

* CreateSpace Direct: Can have either your own ISBN or a CreateSpace-Assigned ISBN Industry standard or custom trim size

* Bookstores and Online Retailers: Can have either your own ISBN* or a CreateSpace-Assigned ISBN Must use an industry standard trim size**

*Libraries and Academic Institutions : Must have a CreateSpace-
Assigned ISBN Industry standard or custom trim size [My mother thought libraries don't take self-published books, but that's not necessarily true - depends on who distributes it. It's all about the distribution channels and royalty/rights arrangements.]

*Standard Distribution Amazon.com: Can have either your own ISBN
or a CreateSpace-Assigned ISBN Industry standard or custom trim size

*Amazon Europe : Can have either your own ISBN or a CreateSpace-Assigned ISBN Industry standard or custom trim size

*eStore: Can have either your own ISBN or a CreateSpace-Assigned ISBN Industry standard or custom trim size
