1. That's it I want to live in the television world of the Great British Bake-Off. Where there is no disease, people make lovely tasty treats, have tea parties on a beautiful big lawn, help each other, and are exceedingly kind, while making jokes. Even though it's a competition, everyone is exceedingly kind, the losers are hugged and comforted, the winners get kisses and flowers and a cake platform. There's a bit tea party on grassy lawn. No sexism, no racism, no prejudice, no homophobia, no xenophobia...and the worst that can happen might be a gentle rain or cake disaster.

2. What are five comfort television shows?

* Great British Bake-Off
* Mozart in the Jungle
* This is Us
* The Gilmore Girls
* Buffy the Vampire Slayer

As someone who has steadfastly resisted reality shows for most of my life, I find myself watching more of them in my old age.

This season of Masterchef, for instance, has been nothing short of brilliant. The wild card for this particular season is Jeff, a surly but talented home cook who might be as close as we get to George Costanza (of Seinfeld) in real life. He constantly screws up in team challenges, putting himself and his teammates up for elimination. Then, in the elimination challenge, he turns on the mojo and breezes through to the next round. (My wife thinks it's a deliberate strategy--but I don't know....)

In the newest episode, a 19 year-old cook named Gabriel, well-liked by audience, fellow chefs and judges alike, botched a pasta dish and was eliminated. But Gordon Ramsey, convinced of the kid's talent, made the extraordinary gesture of paying for Gabriel to attend culinary school. Not to be outdone, Aron Sanchez promised him a job when he finished school.

In the next elimination challenge, Jeff (yes, again) and two other chefs were instructed to create a perfect chocolate souffle in 35 minutes. It was amazingly suspenseful. And for the first time ever in one of these competitions (especially so close to the finals) Ramsey and the other judges could not find a flaw in any of the finished souffles. They were all perfect, and all three contestants survived to the next round.

Check it out. And I'll check out British Bake-Off. These days, it sounds about my speed.

I am -- and the husband has moved his gaming night to Wednesday, so by that point, the Tuesday episode manages to fall onto my computer and I can watch. Those cakes the first week were amazing.

No, this is S8 and I'm downloading. That's how I managed to get my hands on the first three seasons that haven't aired here, plus last year's Xmas special PBS hasn't shown yet.

It's on alt.binaries.teevee. I use the EasyNews service, so I'm not going dealing with the newsgroups directly. If you absolutely can't find it, let me know.
