Travel Meme, ganked from yourlibrarian...who took it from a new social media site, Pillowfort. I'm not sure why we need a new social media site. I'm having troubles keeping track of the ones we already have and that I'm on. I'm too busy, I can only handle two at a time.

> Where is your favourite place that you have travelled to?

Favorite Place: London and Wales
Favorite Trip: Turkey Sailing Trip in 2000

> Where was the first place that you travelled to?

Up the east coast to Maine and possibly Canada, I was a baby at the time. They passed Woodstock (yes the actual Woodstock -- it was 1968.)

> What is the furthest distance (KM/miles) that you have travelled?

Probably Australia to Kansas City.

> What is the most vivid sense-memory from travelling?

I tend to be very visual. But I remember the smell of Costa Rican Coffee Beans, of course I was only there a year ago. The taste of meringue and creame and orange sandwiches...basically you have two meringues, with a sort of whipped cream, and oranges in the center. Amazing. Got them in Wales, I believe Aberswyth. Also, in Colorado -- a strawberry rubarb pie that I've never been able to find again -- it was a this little restaurant tucked away in Rocky Mountain National Park, and way back in the 1980s.

> What is your favourite travel souvenir?

I tend to buy or save very few things because I'm not fond of clutter.

So, I don't really have anything.

Either/Or

> Planes OR Trains OR Boats

Trains -- only mode of transportation that is a)reliable, b) easy to get on and off of, c)doesn't give me motion sickness at all (I tend to get motion sickness easily), e) safest

Probably a good thing that I work for a railroad, isn't it?

> City OR Countryside OR Seaside

City. I like to be able to get around without needing a car. You need a car everywhere else.
Although I do love the water and seaside.

Good thing I live in a City that also happens to be on a series of islands and water is readily accessible at all times. (Personally I prefer the mountains and trees to the sea...but they are also readily accessible.)

> Hotel OR Hostel OR BnB

Eh depends on the BnB and the Hotel. I tend to prefer Hotels, but I've stayed in some wonderful BnB's in Wales and England (they really know how to do BnB's overseas). It's also a great way to get to know a culture. If you stay in a Hotel -- it tends to be rather copy-cutter. However there are some great and unique hotels out there.

I don't like Hostels. Dorm rooms and bunk beds don't work for me. Have done two, one in Wales (bleargh) and one in Ireland (somewhat better but was like doing a slumber party in a school gym.

> Hot OR Cold
Cold, mostly because I'm not a huge fan of the heat. However I'm really a mid-temperature person because when traveling I'm likely to be spending a lot of time outdoors and I don't want to be miserable.

> All-inclusive OR Budget OR Pay-as-you-go

Hmm, that's a tough one. I prefer pay as you go compared to, say, an all-inclusive resort. Mainly because all-inclusive tends to be rather expensive and not really all-inclusive. They are deceptive.
There's add-on's, tips, etc. Also the meals often aren't as good or varied.

It should be noted that I've never done a cruise. Sailing trip? Yes. Ferries? Yes. Cruise? No. I get sea-sick. And cruises tend to be on huge boats with thousands of people, and I often travel by myself. My idea of hell is being trapped on a boat for five days with thousands of strangers. I want to get away from NYC when I travel, I do not want to take it with me.

What I prefer is to have a central location or hotel, and thoroughly explore the surrounding area.

I may try a river boat cruise or something smaller, that is if I can handle the sea-sickness.

Not a fan of Budget -- I like to be comfortable. I'm on vacation. I can be cheap at home.

> Activity heavy OR Lazy

I'd say lazy. I've done both. But I require down-time. The Turkey sailing trip was wonderful in that regard. The Costa Rica Trip on the other hand was a tad too busy. We were traveling constantly. I'd have preferred staying in one or two places and soaking those up, instead of four for ten days.

I prefer being on a light schedule, with one or maybe two places to visit each day (not counting going out for meals) but also being willing to prioritize things to see so that if we want to do something else or do nothing on a particular day, that's ok too.

Future

> Where do you most want to travel to?
New Zealand.

But thinking I might settle for Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Bahamas, Amesterdam, Spain, Italy and Ireland

> What one monument do you want to see the most?

I'm not really a monument person. They are okay. I've seen most of the big ones already, having gone to DC more than once, lived in Philly, lived in NYC, visited South Dakota...and was underwhelmed. I like natural stuff -- like Yosemite National Park or Glaciar National Park, would love to visit those next. Or Denali in Alaska.

Manmade stuff? Eh.

Although the Vietnam War Memorial and the 9/11 Memorials moved me. And yes, it's hard to not love the Effel Tower.

I would like to see the Taj Mahal someday and maybe the Great Wall of China.

> What’s your most ambitious travel plan?

African Safari -- would require at least two-three weeks and wickedly expensive.

> What’s one new thing you want to try on your travels?

Hmmm...I've thought about a hiking, biking or walking trip. Also wouldn't mind learning to scuba dive, except it would kill me. My inner ear has issues. OR a hot air balloon. I like adventure travel.

> If you could travel with anyone, who would it be and why?

Don't know anyone at the moment. I'd love to travel some more with my Mom, but alas she can't travel any longer. It is what it is.

Food & Drink

> What’s the best food you’ve had on your travels?

Hmmm...on the sailing trip, the Captain who hailed from Wales was an excellent chef. We had some of the best food on that boat. (I was also on dramaine). And when we visited France...the food was amazing. I also remember loving the food in Wales.

> What’s the most memorable food you’ve had on your travels?

See above.

* Costa Rican Coffee and Alcohol made from sugar cane.
* Crepes in Bretagne, France -- amazing. We'd have them freshly made and dip them in coffee
* Those meringues in Wales
* Chocolate Eclaires and Pasteries at High Tea at Harrods in London
* Moussakka in Juarez, Mexico..which I think made everyone sick
* Strawberry Rubarb Pie in Rocky Mountain National Park
* Arthur Bryant Barbecue in Kansas City (which may not count)

> Do you drink alcohol while on holiday? If so, what’s the best alcoholic drink you’ve had while on holiday?

Yes. There was a really good drink I had down in Costa Rica -- they make the best smoothies on the planet, no milk, just fruit...and amazing. And I think they have the market conquered on Pina Coldas..which I had on a sunset cruise in Costa Rica on my birthday.

> What traditional or famous meal do you most anticipate trying on your travels?

We did do traditional Costa Rican cusine -- rice and beans. Lots of rice and beans, and excellent coffee and smoothies.

But to be honest, my mind is a blank.

> What food that you ate while travelling have you made at home?

My mind is a blank. I think I tried the meringues and got nowhere. They were dirt cheap at an open-air market either in Cardiff or Swansea, can't remember which. I sort of fell in love with Wales, I traveled around the country for two months one summer collecting ghost stories and folk tales when I was 21.

Huh, that's quite the combination.

Your comment about the rhubarb pie reminds me of this afternoon when I tried a quiche at a new place for lunch. It was fine but not as good as this little French place in Iowa. Everything there was good. Mike remembered nothing about the meal at all!

doesn't give me motion sickness at all (I tend to get motion sickness easily)

I've historically been very prone to it as well though it's diminished as I got older. That's good to hear though as at some point I'd like to take a long train trip and I'd prefer to think I'd be fine reading during it!

Also wouldn't mind learning to scuba dive, except it would kill me. My inner ear has issues. OR a hot air balloon. I like adventure travel.

I've thought of hot air balloons but I'm afraid of heights and I can't see being comfortable doing it. A friend did it a few times and loved it.

I also thought I'd like to scuba dive but it turns out that wouldn't work. A friend and I went on a "snuba" outing, where you were essentially snorkeling but with a floating can of air and a tube so you could dive down. I discovered minutes in that the air was so dry that it kept making me cough (obviously not great underwater). Luckily I enjoy snorkeling just fine but I was disappointed that scuba diving wouldn't be for me.
