May. 27th, 2019 02:37 pm1. Big Bang Theory Finale -- better than expected. Sort of surprising. My biggest take aways from it, was that it was in some respects less sexist than most of the series to date, and instead of Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, or various male centric superhero comics -- the shout out was to...Buffy the Vampire Slayer and in particular to Buffy herself as a cult icon.
And Sheldon's Nobel Peace Prize instead of being shared with the fellas, was shared with his wife, brilliant scientist and collaborator, Amy.
Best line?
Sheldon standing up on the podium, getting the Nobel Peace Prize, then looking at his friends, then seeing Sarah Michelle Gellar sitting next to Raj in the crowd. "Wait, is that Buffy the Vampire Slayer?"
Interesting.
2. Discovery of Witches had a mean cliff-hanger ending. Good thing it's being renewed or I'd be pissed.
3. Laying back and not doing all that much this weekend. Went for a couple of walks, and been doing some writing. Nothing worth reporting on.
4. Hmm...here's the list of top box office films of all time.

Date: 2019-05-27 07:56 pm (UTC)SHELDON: You call those friends? They're leaving us.
AMY: They're leaving because you broke their hearts!
S: I...didn't mean to.
A: You never do! That's the only reason people tolerate you!
S: Even you?
A: Sometimes....yeah.
Sometimes, you can only show how deep the love is if you show how deep the pain is.
In general, I was very happy with the finale. TBH, I wanted Raj to end up with Anu (the hot concierge), but his status as singleton of the group doesn't feel off, either.
Kripke, Stuart and Cinammon got their final bows, and the elevator came back on line in a perfectly timed gag.
I wish we could have had one subplot near the end where Penny rethinks her hard line attitude toward kids, so the announcement here wouldn't have been so jarring--but you can't have everything.
On the biggest stage of his life, Sheldon expresses true humility. That's a great ending.

Date: 2019-05-27 08:27 pm (UTC)They are probably adjusted for inflation, but one ticket to Titanic would look like 1/2 of what Avengers: End Game cost and that would skew the numbers.

Date: 2019-05-27 08:34 pm (UTC)But it is a valid point. I mean, the ticket to see Endgame was $21 as opposed to Infinity War at $15, and Star Wars Force Awakens at $14, and Avatar at $10. There's a huge difference. Not to mention Titantic at maybe 5-10 dollars. I think I might have paid $8 for Titantic, which is a lot less than $21 for Endgame.
Keep in mind, the movie theaters only make money off of the concessions. The ticket price pays them to show the film. So the ticket price is going to the film makers, and the concessions to the movie theaters.

Date: 2019-05-27 09:23 pm (UTC)Because there wasn't much else out there -- think about it? There was no television when Gone with the Wind was released. And relatively little when Sound of Music came out. They had radio and movies. No video games, no cell phones, no internet, no television, and no distractions during movies.
So it's not really a fair comparison? Titantic to The Avengers, sort of is, because we did have a lot of those advances by the time Titantic aired but not all of them. We didn't have Netflix back then, or Amazon. We had blockbuster videos. And the internet was nothing like it is today.
Ticket prices have partly gone up due to the lack of people going to the movies. And to get more people to come -- they've changed the experience. There's movie theaters that provide you with food and cocktails like a restaurant throughout the movie (drove me nuts, I do not understand how others do it), Eye Pick -- which is basically a movie theater where you sit in your own private little cocoon, with blanket and a pillow and a place for popcorn and a drink and complete privacy from other movie goers (I've never been to it, but its apparently in NYC somewhere), and the reserved seating, and the IMAX, 3d and now 4d experiences....all to bring more people into the theater and away from their 55-85 inch television sets. I mean I can basically see a movie in my home, on about the same size scree and same experience as in the theater. So that alone affects ticket sales.
