These daily entries are going to end soon - partly because I'm losing steam, and we're slowly opening up again. New York City is tip-toeing its way back. Granted they lifted all the mask mandates - but to be honest the mandates weren't why people wore masks - people wore them, because they realized they worked. And workplaces, stores, public transportation, hospital, etc did the same.
The plexi-glass makes me nervous. I'm glad crazy workplace never went that route.
Regarding crazy workplace - apparently it does work 24/7 when it can get away with it. I got emails from Breaking Bad Manager to the lawyer regarding my Painting Project.
1. The Kennedy Center Honors for 2020 - were postponed to May 2021, and will air in June. They are honoring Dick Van Dyke, Debbie Allen, a violinist that I've not heard of (because I don't keep track of that sort of thing), Garth Brooks, and Joan Baez. Dick Van Dyke was thrilled - at 90 something to be honored - it's the caper on his career (he stated) and he loved the more intimate gathering. (Individually spaced tables on the Kennedy Center Opera Stage, looking out on an empty audience. Each could bring a few guests. Baez brought Dr. Fauci because she'd struck up a correspondence with him after painting his portrait and posting it online.)
Mother brought it up in our chats today. But she forgot about Joan Baez.
2. Mother also talked about her friends who have to go to Germany to get needed Cancer treatment. Mr and Mrs. F. Mr F has a rare type of cancer that they can only treat effectively in Germany. So they've gone through this ordeal to get passports up to date, etc, to fly out there. (They are both in their 70s). And Mrs. F has an inherited form of leukemia - she doesn't get ill with it - but it does make it difficult for the vaccine to work and make anti-bodies.
Meanwhile, church acquaintance is still drumming up funds for her expensive cancer treatments in Mexico. She has metasized breast cancer - and the treatments have reduced it by 66%. She wasn't expected to live this long with it. She's lost all her hair, her left arm no longer seems to work, she has laryginitis, and she is often to weak to stand ...but it is working.
To date she's raised about $4500 or more, and has $12,000 to go.
3. Tried to watch episode five of "The Nevers" and it didn't hold my interest. It reminds me a great deal of how I felt towards Dollhouse and Marvel Agents of Shield - I didn't like any of the characters, so didn't care. It's an odd thing about writers - I can fall in love with one of their works, but not like anything else they write. And often wonder - how they came up with the one I did like. Actually this is true of many artists - television actors, singers, bands, etc. Often I will like one thing they did - love it to the point of fannish obsession, but nothing else.
This does however happen more with writers than any other artists for some reason or other.
I don't quite know why that is?
ETA: Just found out that Claudia Black has a role in the sixth episode. And they do a big twist of sorts. I'm not sure I'll like the twist - too comic booky. But I only have two episodes left - so I might as well finish the season.
4. I had a bit too much sugar today - and my nerves are all a-tingly. I'm a touch jittery. I need to scale way back, and no longer buy certain things, and be very careful with any added sugars and stop drinking any alcohol. I've been struggling with the sugar thing for the last two years now. (I don't eat any carbs - no grains, at all. So the sugars are mainly cider, almond flour pancakes (with curry flavor) and maple syrup, the cinnamon/coffee ice cream (about a bowl and a half), two gluten free crackers with nut butter (I made my own) with a little jam, berries/pineapple, and a chocolate bar.
I told mother and she was aghast. "Just one of those is more than enough, although I understand, I do the same thing for the same reasons." At least she's understanding about it. She warned me that if I didn't do a better job of regulating it - I could end up in the hospital or be forced to take my blood sugar daily.
But my bodies negative reaction to it was a wake up call. I'm going to have to go off sugar the same way I went off of glutens.
5. Grey's Anatomy keeps removing characters from its roster. Killed off Deluca this year, Avery is going to Boston (he's taking April and his daughter with him, April broke up with Matt. He's also taking Tom Krasick, who had an epiphany of sorts - and wanted to make a difference for POC. It's also gotten very preachy about social justice issues lately, actually all the ABC series have. Including the soap opera that I'm watching. Is this true across the board? Ponders. Yes, actually, I picked up on it Nancy Drew this week. Except Shonda Rhimes shows have always been a touch on the preachy side. She loves long monologues that could double as sermons.
I'm wondering if Grey's is beginning to wind down? However it is realistic - in that not everyone who starts a residency program at a hospital is going to stay there. What's interesting about it - is this year, we've had a lot of cameos from characters that were killed off in prior seasons.
The lead character is rather resilient in that she's dealt with a lot of loss, yet remained standing and made new connections along the way. That may be why I still watch it - I find the resiliency comforting.
6. Speaking of killing off characters or removing them from your roster? Mare of East Town surprised me in its fifth episode. It killed off a character that I didn't expect it to kill off. Granted these shows do, but this shocked me.
The series is filmed on location in suburban Philadelphia during the winter months - reminding me why northeastern winters can be dreary.
Filming of the show began in the fall of 2019 around suburban Philadelphia and was reported to still be in progress as of March 2020, with plans to continue through April. However, production was shut down early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In early September 2020, a Philadelphia news station reported that filming was set to resume within the month.
Because the story is set in a fictionalized version of Easttown Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where series creator Brad Ingelsby was born (the show moves the location east to adjacent Delaware County), there were discussions about whether to use the "Delco accent", a version of Philadelphia English common in Delaware County. It was Winslet who insisted that the accent be used, despite being a particularly difficult accent to learn, because she felt the community itself was an important character in the story, and the authentic accent would help emphasize that. “There were a lot of things I could have really leant into that would have made it sound like I was doing something a bit gimmicky and I didn’t want that to happen,” Winslet said. “So I just had to drill it and drill it and drill it.” She claimed that learning the accent was so difficult that it caused her to "throw things".
Filming locations include a train station and high-school gymnasium in Coatesville, Pennsylvania (a city in Chester County) and an American Legion hall in Ogden, a community in Delaware County. Inglesby has said that many of the filming locations were around Aston Township, in Delaware County. Winslet reportedly said that, while filming the show, she became obsessed with Wawa convenience stores. “Wawa was a big part of my life for well over a year,” she said. Wawa stores were used as scouting locations for the production's costume designers.
I spent my childhood in Chester County. And this reminded me more of Allentown and Delaware. Not the rolling country-side where I grew up. But it is true - I was a kid in the 1970s, and Chester County was a tad more rural back then, and a lot less housing. Also we tend to romanticize the past in our heads.
But I don't remember the area being that dreary. Of course they are filming in late fall and winter, and the northeast is dreary that time of year.
Mare - is in her early 40s, has a grandchild by a dead son, and a living teenage daughter applying to colleges. She's divorced, with her mother, as portrayed by Jean Smart, living with her. Julianne Nicholson plays her best friend (I'm a fan of Nicholson, and all the female actresses in the series). Dating a college creative writing professor, and the detective who has come down to help her with the case.
There's two cases, which at first appear to be interconnected, but in reality most likely aren't. One is the missing girls case - or the case that has gone on for several years now - and Mare can't manage to solve, and is the whole reason the detective was sent to help her. The other is a murder - the case he is sent to help her with, and resolve, and they believe is potentially linked to the other case. (It's not.)
I'm finding it compelling - more than expected. It is depressing though. And not meant for the faint of heart.

Date: 2021-05-23 12:34 pm (UTC)I think you done very well to keep it up for so long. Years ago I tried to keep a journal. Just didn't have enough I wanted to write down for myself on a daily basis. Going to work every day didn't help!

Date: 2021-05-23 04:03 pm (UTC)I just love to write. I kept a daily journal from the age of 9 until the age of about 35, then realized okay - I don't ever plan on reading any of this, I don't really want others too, and it's not helping.
Live journal/Dreamwidth - is actually better - because I'm aware others are reading, so I have to be more careful with the wording. But I think I'm burned out or just tired?

Date: 2021-05-23 12:42 pm (UTC)I liked how was willing to kill off main characters. With soap operas, I'm reminded of how , one my mother watched, set in a fictional English village, rebooted somewhat after having an airplane crash onto the village!
In recent times, seems to have gotten terribly preachy at times. As with so much in drama, it's more effective to do instead of say.

Date: 2021-05-23 04:13 pm (UTC)He's a bit on the preachy side, and he's terrible at pacing and plot.
I miss Moffet and Davies, who while also preachy at times, were good at plot and pacing, and character.
Soap operas are like superhero comic books in regards to killing off characters. They kill some off permanently, others get resurrected repeatedly. It's hard to take them seriously some times.
Yeah, the sugar thing is different for everyone, I guess? For me - I tend to be a bing-eater of certain things. If I have marshmellows in the house? They'll be gone in less than two days.
Same with hershey bars. If I get bored or nervous or restless - craving something - I will bing eat - particularly in front of the television. I think I picked up the habit from my mother - who was known to make pie crackers (basically pie doe squares with butter, cinnamon and sugar,
baked in the oven. Amazing by the way - I miss those. Haven't had them in over 20 years. Can't now.). She'd make them when she was craving sweets and binge-eat them. But I honestly think if I stopped drinking alcohol completely that would probably help. (I'm not an addict - so not a problem. I don't actually drink that much - but I think its bad for diabetics.)

Date: 2021-06-24 09:17 pm (UTC)Things I liked about some of the stories was that (a) not everything was of galactic importance with the Doctor being critically significant, the place/people we were visiting often got more center-stage and (b) there was often an attempt to explore an interesting science fiction idea, rather than just spectacle and drama and social relevance. Goodness, there was some dreck back then too but often more funny than annoying.

Date: 2021-05-23 04:15 pm (UTC)Sigh.
Only Terminator pulled that off well - possibly because they were the first to do so. Everyone else feels like a bad copy.
