And my mother tells me that my Dad read in the NY Times that they are either doing away with the comma or the period.

Me: They can't do away with the comma.
Mom: Maybe it's the period. Which I wouldn't mind.
Me: They can't do away with the period.
Mom: Why, where do you put a period?
Me: At the end of the sentence. It breaks it up, so you know which sentence is which.
Mom: Oh, maybe it's the comma. Do we really need a comma? I never know where to put it.
Me: Of course we need a comma. It comes after a parenthetical phrase. It breaks up a sentence and clarifies it...you can't just do away with it.
Mom: They don't need it in email or twitter or texting.
Me: Not everything is email and twitter. I'm a writer -- I use commas.
Mom: No one uses it on email and twitter or texting.
Me: Which explains why their emails, texting and twitter make no sense.
