1. Have you ever experienced a hurricane firsthand?
Yes. Several times now. I live NY. So...we've had three visit us.
2. Have you ever experienced outside heat over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celcius)?
Oh, yes. Every summer for a good portion of my life. Spent 17 years in Kansas City, we had summers that were 115 degrees. Currently in NYC and it has gone over 100 degrees on occasion. Also been to places in Australia and Arizona that did.
3. When and where was the coldest temperature you have ever experienced?
About 40 degrees below 0, I think. I stopped paying attention once it goes below 10. Again, lived in Kansas and Colorado for several years. It got really cold in the winters in Kansas City and Lawrence Kansas. The home of extreme temperatures. Over 100 in the summer, and 30 to 40 below with a foot of snow in the winter. I used to think...okay when it gets below 0, do we really need to know the exact temperature? It's too cold to go out, enough said.
4. Is your household prepared for a possible power outage of two to seven days?
Well, I live in a 77 unit apartment building in NYC. But yes, tons of batteries. Candles. A jug of water. First aid kits. Back up charger. Non-perishable items. But, not well. I have experienced a two day blackout in NYC though, and frequent power outages....during hurricanes.
5. Do you have a go bag?
Sort of. It's hard to evacuate NYC. I didn't evacuate during the last three hurricanes. Sat them out. My apartment was fine...because it was on high ground and not really near water, and on the third floor, with a basement, fourth floor, technically speaking. Here -- it's third, but really fourth or fifth. Also, the building dates back to the 1920s, it's pre-war. With generators.
6. Have you ever experienced a Tornado?
Yes. Again lived in Kansas. We went into the basement.
7. Have you ever experienced an Earthquake?
Yes. Two. Once in Kansas, weirdly. And a couple in NYC. We had one several years ago that freaked everyone out. We thought it was a gas explosion or a terrorist attack. But no. It was an earthquake.
We're on a fault line.
