Ahhh...I just took the plung and joined netflix. And have over 18 DVDs in my queue to start. This place is like a candy store for visual media junkies. It literally has every DVD out there including a few I have not been able to find in my local video store - sort of akin to having a KIM's Video Store outlet next door but no need to worry about late fees or rude video store clerks or the fact that someone else checked the disc out first.
What motivated me? That stupid video store fiasco last week - where they charged me a $14.50 late fee for two movies that I know for a fact that I turned in on time, not only on time, but hours before they were due. And made a point of doing it, and was incovienced. Plus had to deal with an extreemely rude guy behind the desk.
Not to mention the fact that it took me thirty-forty minutes to find anything I wanted. So...I pop over to netflix, which a few of my friends have been pestering me to try for ages, and not only do I find the two films I wanted to rent from the one store, but chose not to after they charged me that late fee (in error I might add), but also located a video, I've been hunting for for ages - the original Dennis Potter Singing Detective Series. The one starring Michael Gambon. The classic. Intrigued - I started hunting for others couldn't find in the video places near me and voila, there they are: Carnival Season 1, Dead Like Me Season 1, Entourage Season 1, Once Upon A Time in China (which kidbro keeps telling me to rent), The Station Agent, La Femme Nikita Season 1, plus The L Word S2 which is due out in Oct. My first three are sort of ecletic, we have The Punisher starring Tom Jane (yes, I'm in a weird mood, want a violent cheesy revenge flick - sneer at me all you want), The Singing Detective disc 1 (didn't get both discs at the same time, in case, I'm not crazy about it), and The Station Agent.

Also the cost? Not as much as I thought. It actually costs less to rent DVD's from netflix than elsewhere. You can do the unlimited monthly of $9.99 (rent just one at a time), the 2 at a time, limited to 4 a month at 11.99, 2 at a time, unlimited at 14.99, or the one I'm choosing which is 3 at a time for 17.99. (I'm doing the 2 week free trial to start). To give you a better idea - netflix costs $2.99 per DVD, no late fees, the only inconveince? Hunting a mailbox to send them back. But no cost to send back -it's pre-paid. I drug my feet because of the mail-box deal, but realized not really that big an issue - if my bills get to the right place, sure the DVDs will. And have two mail drops at work. On top of that - you can exchange recs with friends on the site.

A friend told me they'll get to me pretty fast, since one of the outlets is literally in Brooklyn. She used to get them in a day.

I love it when I discover a new toy!

It's a good deal, especially for finding TV show DVDs that are pretty much impossible to find at my local vid stores.

Although some local distributors in Netflix have long waiting list for certain DVDs and it took me months to get a copy, but that's only really happened to me twice in two years, so....

No sneering here--I like cheesy action flicks, although good-cheesy ones are hard to find. I liked The Transporter a lot, for the great choreography of the martial arts moves to music and the sexy star. We just joined up with the Blockbuster version of Netflix, but I'm not thrilled with the selection so far. I've got the Battlestar Galactica mini-series in my waiting list, but I want the first season also. Hmm, I just checked and it comes out on video on Sept. 20, but the Blockbuster site doesn't say anything about it.

Netflix rocks. You can't get any more convenient than my mailbox!! I don't plan to watch Million Dollar Baby until I'm in the mood (it's been two weeks so far), and I can re-watch/listen to EAGLES: Hell Freezes Over until I'm sick of it.

In the mean time I'm enjoying SCRUBS the first season immensely!! One DVD at a time.

ENJOY!

I am a total netflix junkie, I've got about 200 DVDs in my queue. I joined in order to get some foreign and independent films that the local video rental stores don't carry (this is not NYC, here in Iowa they just don't bother carrying things that are not main stream), and then I discovered this huge collection of BBC television!
I've watched all of Anthony Stewart Head's Manchild
and I'm working my way through all of the Midsomer Murder Mysteries.
I've found netflix to be very fast and reliable, and here in small town Iowa the mail is frequently slow and unreliable...I don't know what their secret is!

I've found Jeeves and Wooster - which I've been dying to see forever, Hugh Laurie plays the comic role of Wooster in the BBC version of PG Wodehouse series which I adore. Also found Shield S1, and Six Feet Under S3 ( I had to give up HBO/SHowtime after S2, so couldn't see the rest of them.) Plus the Mizukai animated movies.

The only drawback is you sort of have to know what you are looking for - but then you have to do that in a video store too. And I'll probably still rent occassionally from Blockbuster. Ah, a way to stroke my media junkie fetish - she says watching Gilmore Girls reruns on ABC Family.

Good on you, 'kat. Now you can snag that Millennium episode with Marsters with no pain.

Ah, but I already saw it on CD a while back, so probably won't snag it.
Once was enough. Not that it wasn't good - it was. Just not a fan of the series. Rather re-watch him as Spike than in that role.
