Aggravating day. A day I'd describe as a lot of little aggravating drips, culminating in leaving my headphones on my desk at work (I realized it when they weren't with me on the train and it was alas too late to go back and retrieve them - if it had been my cell phone, yes - I'd have had no choice but to do so, but I don't really need the head phones at home - I only use them at work and on the commute. Unfortunately they need to be charged, which means I won't be able to use them immediately on Monday.) I also can't find my air buds. But I could find the plug-in earphones. So not all is lost, I suppose?

Less said about the rest of the day, the better. It was just a series of minor aggravations. We shall speak of it no more.

I already whined about the day to my poor mother, who decided to distract me by regaling me with news about my niece's trip to Montauk to see her grandfather...who apparently lives in a chicken coop on his ex-partner's property. The ex-partner (a novelist, writer, and former lecturer/teacher) lives with their adopted 31 year old daughter in the house.

Niece and sisterinlaw ("T") drove all the way out to Montauk, Long Island (which is...according to Google Maps, 4 hours and 28 minutes or 232 miles) to visit Niece's Maternal Grandfather, who up until this trip - we'd all assumed lived in a garage or guest house on his ex-partner (a semi-famous Jewish NY Literary writer, well semi-famous in certain circles, I sincerely doubt anyone here has heard of her - she hasn't really published anything in years) property. She lives with her adopted daughter (whom she adopted from China in the early 1990s). The adopted daughter is 31, and teaches out on Long Island (we think).

Mother: So, Niece's Grandfather doesn't live in a garage on the property like we originally thought. He lives in a chicken coop.
Me: Wait. A CHICKEN COOP???
Mother: yup.
Me: But...does it have heat?
Mother: I think it must have a space heater. Niece saw it and reported it was not a garage but actually a chicken coop. I don't know anything else.
ME: You're very frustrating - you provide news, but are a bit scant on the details.
Mother: What do you expect? I'm 83, and my memory is sketchy and I forget to ask things.

So I text my Niece - who advises that it is a chicken coop that has been converted into a living space with a bed and plumbing, and she thinks a space heater. He's apparently been living in it for several years now.

They spent most of their visit talking to the former significant other and had lunch. But they didn't stay with them (no room), and stayed nearby at a Motel or Hotel instead. Mother asked if they saw the 31 year old "daughter"/sister of T, but Niece thinks she was hiding. This does explain why my brother didn't join them.

I think the reason I enjoy Buffy S6 so much - is I find it relatable? It is about an unemployed/depressed young woman jumping from one bad job to another, juggling bills, a sister, social life or lack thereof, and a boyfriend who lives in crypt and cheats at kitten poker. It's hyper-realism in a supernatural setting. The villains are nerdy guys from high school, who bullied girls. (Any woman who has ever entered a comic book store, a fan convention, attempted to play D&D during the 1980s or been in a co-ed fandom online - can relate.)

I love the beginning of the Season, where Buffy is trying really really hard not to be physically attracted to the sexually hot ambiguously evil vampire who keeps helping her for reasons she can't quite fathom. Weirdly, Spike looks different in each season. This season - he's lost a lot of weight. He looks older and thinner. Rawer. She gives in during the musical episode, and actually kisses him. And well, there's no going back after that. (Honestly, who could blame her? I'd have kissed him at the end of the musical episode.) In S6, for most of the season, Spike is the most tolerable of the characters. The rest, I kind of want to smack at various points.

I'd forgotten how annoyed I was with Giles for leaving everyone in the lurch. They don't have a slayer. The Buffy-Bot has issues, and it's just a matter of time before everything goes kablooey. But no, Giles has to go back to his lovely estate and life in England. This was just a failed gig. (I want to kick him.) I'm annoyed with him in Tabula Rasa for doing much the same thing. Clearly Willow has issues - but Giles decides he wants to go, granted he's kind of ineffectual to begin with, but still.

I think season 6 is when I finally started to watch Buffy, and then I had to find somewhere to watch the earlier seasons. Wow - it seems to long ago...
