Well, I apparently have mice now. Saw the droppings and the chew marks on three things - my recycling bag, and a cracker bag that was sitting out, as well as a candy bar. Haven't seen them yet - knock on wood. Not really afraid of mice. Nor do they gross me out like roaches do. But I may be allergic and this could explain the heightened allergy issues this season.

How do you get rid of mice? Sent email to landlord - to request help.

Last night finished watching the five episodes of Friday Night Lights that I had saved to DVR. This is an excellent television series by the way. Flawless this year. At least so far. Tight in plot, characterization, and theme. Also a good and realistic depiction of class, race, and gender issues in suburban Texas. This season of FNL is actually the best to date.

Now watching marathon of Flashforward and I'm already bored. This show definitely focused on the wrong characters, and seems to go all over the place. It's hard for me to care that much about anyone for very long and I find myself wandering off to do something else during it - in this case - clean up mouse droppings.

CW and I are contemplating going kayaking this summer. There's free kayaking at Chelsea Piers and in Brooklyn. But first need to buy new shorts and a swimsuit. Going to try Lands-end per CW's suggestion. She also suggests Lane Bryant for jeans - they actually have jeans for all female body types - not just for women who are are thin and small, like *cough*CalvinKLein*cough* and the Gap.

I live in a house with garden (and compostation) well over 100 years old - i have some experience with mice:

You are right to be careful, mice sometimes carry diseases which are harmful to humans. No need to panic (after all, our ancestors lived with animals small and large for millenia), but if you are aware of health issues better to take action.

Do not poison them indoors! The most common poisons don't work fast enough, allowing the mice to spread the poison to whereever they go (kitchen, etc). On top of that - you really DON'T want dieing mice behind the bed, wall, kitchen sink (where you find them after the funny smells got really strong and other vermin found them first...). Besides, rat/mice poison is actually really harmful to humans, too.

What works:

Cat(s): Works, but then you have a cat (it is how i got rid of mice). It is also ecologic, leaves no hazardous waste and prevents mice in the future (unless your cat is really lazy...).

Still, you need to like cats. ;-)

Rats: Work like a charm - once you have rats, they kill off all the mice. Disadvantage: Well, now you have rats!

Live traps: i never bothered with these but i don't hear too much good stuff about them.

Death traps: As long as you remember where you put them (WRITE IT DOWN!) and you are prepared to work the traps for quite some time (control/setup at least every day for several month) this is probably your best bet.

I don't know the laws in your country, but in mine i would be allowed to curtail the rent during pest infestation (unless i actually am responsible for the pest infestation in the first place). You should probably look into the laws just to be sure who has to pay for what.

Good luck! I would send over my cat - but she's shy. ;-)

Can't have the cat for two reasons: 1) not permitted in lease agreement to have pets, 2) I'm allergic. (I like them, but am allergic apparently.)

Landlord does have another option - an electronic mouse awayer - which we're going to try. They are basically just in the kitchen.
He thinks he's found an option that does not involve me picking up dead mice around my apartment - which all your options above seem to involve, even the one with the cat. And much prefer to have mice than rats...rats are just gross.
