Seriously, is it just me, or has Alan Ball been watching re-runs of Passions and Dark Shadows back to back? With a touch of Harvest Home, Cat People and Wicker Man thrown in? That was truly a hilarious episode.
Short unspoilerly reaction? OMG, so funny. I laughed harder at that last scene than I've laughed at 90% of the situation comedies all year long.
Sookie: OMG! You just killed my fairy Godmother!
Eric : huh? Oh sorry.
ROFL!!!
I swear the Sookie/Eric bits are hilarious.
The Jason bits are just...words escape me. Jason's tale appears to be a be careful what you wish for experience. He's apparently become a brood mare for the panther clan. Literally the clan. All the women are fucking him or rather raping him, not just Crystal. It reminded me of Harvest Home or maybe Cat People? And ewww...I don't remember Cat People being that nasty. Harvest Home is pretty creepy and the Jason storyline is truly creepy and well, ewwww...
Bill? Can you be any more hypocritical honey? Although it was quite hilarious that he was giving Jessica advice, after she'd bitten a human, while in the other room his minions were killing another vampire who basically did the same thing - except that guy got caught on tape. Just in case you didn't know Bill was a hypocritical SOB...
Pam: Bill has tried to kill Eric before, he obviously set him up with the coven hoping to get the opportunity to execute him - promise me that you won't tell Bill where he is and hide Eric from Bill.
Eric: Why does Bill want to kill me?
Sookie: Because you tasted me.
Eric (smiling): I did??
Sookie: Against my will, so it was the equivalent of a fang rape. (Yes - but for a good cause - he had to get rid of Russell who was planning on killing you, Bill, and Eric and everyone else on the planet and it's not like he killed you. Seriously Sookie can you be any more self-absorbed?)
ERic: oh...sorry.
Tara comes to Sookie to plead with her to get Eric to back off of Lafayette and not torture Lafayette in his basement for three days. Also explains that the spell to get rid of Eric was only done after Eric went after the coven, tried to kill the coven leader Marnie and attacked Tara.
Sookie: So what exactly was the spell that you used?
Tara: Why do I get the feeling you care more about what happened to Eric Northman than to me and Lafayette???
(Yes, why is it? Very curious.)
Oh, and the creepy voodoo baby doll (that I'm almost positive Hoyt's mother placed in Hoyt's house)
makes a reappearance. They tried to get rid of it. Jessica threw it out. It came back. Hoyt threw it out. It came back. Hoyt confronts Jessica about it and wonders why it keeps popping up. Hmmm. And just in case we're wondering who planted it? We see Hoyt's mother ordering a doll that look creepily like it off the tv set.
Anyone else sick of the Tommy and Sam? Can Tommy die now?
Sam and Tara still have chemistry...but so does Tara and the hot girlfriend in New Orleans who must be wondering how long does it take to bury one's grandmother anyway?
Can't decide who is crazier or creepier, Arlene or the baby. Jessica decides to give voodoo baby doll to Arlene's baby in yet another attempt to get rid of it.
Arlene: Isn't it a bit too dirty?
Jessica: Oh it's perfectly fine, see he likes it.
Terry looking a bit uncertain. (Also Terry looks like a member of the coven)
Speaking of the Coven...
Marnie: Eric tried to kill me - he should pay for that.
Lafayette: Let's hope he forgets about it. (Don't worry he has, that I can guarantee). Because he's a 1000 year old vampire who can kill all of us without thinking.
Poor Pam - she's seriously fucked. So is Bill, by the way, he just doesn't know it yet.
This episode was written by Alan Ball - who snuck a novel by Charlain Harris into the episode - it's the one that Sookie is reading - would be hilarious if it was Dead to the World (which is the book most of this episode was loosely based on). The main difference between Ball and Harris (outside of the fact that Ball is a more imaginative plotter (which trust me isn't hard to do, Harris idea of plotting is how fast can I get these two characters to have sex without it looking completely improbable?), is the dialogue. Harris can't write dialogue worth shit. Also Ball has a knack of satirizing the medium.
That last line is just precious. Eric, you just killed my fairy godmother! (LOL!!!) Something tells me the fairies are not going to take that sitting down! Eric - whoops.

2)that bit with Eric in S2? Nothing compared to what Bill, Eric and King Russell do in S3.
Both are revealed in S3. To say more would spoil you.

Date: 2011-07-11 05:24 pm (UTC)You're right. She is horribly self-absorbed. I mean, in ep 1, Jason had to remind her what Tara had been through with Eggs, and then Franklin Mott. Sookie seemed to have forgotten all about it.

Date: 2011-07-11 07:48 pm (UTC)Considering what Bill did..I mean setting her up to be attacked by psychos, just so she'd have to drink his blood in order to survive in S1, then lying to her about it ever since? (not sure I could forgive that - considering that's what changed her life and not necessarily in a good way).Or almost draining her dry in the back of the van? (although the second one was beyond his control, sort of.)

Not to mention that she has not noticed Jason's disappearance at all. Sookie disappears and Jason hunts for her. Jason disappears...
Same thing with Tara. Tara comes all the way back to Bon Temps when she discovers Sookie is still alive. And Sookie can't be bothered to spend one day with her??? Or care what is happening with her?? Why did Tara bother?
If I were Tara - I'd write Sookie off and go back to the hot girlfriend in New Orleans.
[Hee. I don't like Sookie that much, can you tell? ;-) ]

Date: 2011-07-11 11:42 pm (UTC)Honestly, after last night I am pretty much ready to chuck this show up as a loss and move on to something else... but you are right, it is hilarious in a way... maybe I'll hang in there for a while longer...

Date: 2011-07-11 11:49 pm (UTC)Because if you didn't like Sookie in the books, there really was no point. And well, the books weren't funny. ;-)

Date: 2011-07-12 02:49 pm (UTC)Yes, Eric biting her without permission does pale into insignificance next to Bill's behaviour, especially as Bill is supposed to be her 'soulmate.' Now where have I heard this before?

Good point. I don't like her terribly much either, but I do enjoy the Eric/Sookie interaction even if I don't understand Eric's obsession with her.

Date: 2011-07-12 05:00 pm (UTC)Agreed. They are hilarious. And have great chemistry. Actually, sad to say, Sookie is the most likable and interesting when she's interacting with Eric.
Outside of the fairy and telepath bit? I don't get the appeal either.

Yes, it is annoying romantic trope that keeps popping up isn't it? So sick of it.
I'd blame Whedon, but I'm pretty sure it pre-dates him.

Date: 2011-07-12 12:02 am (UTC)I dunno. I think she has the right to be miffed. He drank from her against her will. Fang!raped is still the operative phrase. Just because Eric had good motives doesn't lessen Sookie's feeling violated.
That being said, I think Sookie is incredibly self-absorbed. She's a terrible friend to Tara, in this season and in season 3. I think the reason she cares more about the spell is because Eric is now her problem, where as Tara's emotional trauma is Tara's problem. Meh.

Date: 2011-07-12 02:50 pm (UTC)True, but she seems a let readier to forgive Bill's way more heinous transgressions against her.
Hmm, think I've come across that one before.

Date: 2011-07-12 04:20 pm (UTC)Hmm, think I've come across that one before.
Exactly. A popular narrative "tween" trope that I can't stand. The heroine is All ABOUT some boy. No one else really matters but this boy. She's "Juliet" and she will just die if she can't have her "Romeo". And everything he does no matter what it is...is forgiveable. If someone else did that? She'd be pissed and kick their ass. If someone else did something relatively minor in comparison...oh that's a huge deal - it's a CRIME! But if her honey, her moon and stars does it - it's not a problem. No big deal at all.
Oh..and no one else matters. Her friends? Pfft. Guy comes first. Family? Pffile. Guy comes first. Her own life? Eh. Guy comes first.
Occasionally she'll come to her senses, like Sookie has appeared to and break things off..but she still mopes and still sees him as trustworthy and justified in all his actions.
Ugh.
