* Finally found the soundtrack to The Wire - All the Pieces that Matter - Music from Five Years of The Wire. The Wire is one of those rare television series where everything more or less works, acting, direction, writing, and music. Oh and I figured out where I'd seen Clark Peters who played Lester before, he went on for a bit part in Covert Affairs, as well as Treme.
Loved the Wire.
* Started watching S5 Dexter and have come to the conclusion that this is meant to be bridge season, it has that feel to it. So far, pretty slow. I feel as if we're treading water. Although the first episode is a fairly apt exploration of grief. Everyone keeps saying it looks like he's not feeling anything, okay...so he's not crying. Big whoop. Not everyone cries, people in shock don't cry. So that did not work for me. Other than that...good episode, just my attention kept wandering.
No real plans for the weekend, outside of nursing my back and trying to get my ass to the gym and to church. Oh and write, want to do some fictional creative writing if I can. Even if it doesn't quite go anywhere. Wish I could go hiking - but...well back issues, and no hiking boots.
* The new tv season doesn't look that lame to me...of course I like weird stuff.
There's some interesting takes on fairy tales. Apparently writers finally got bored of super-heroes, vampires, forensic scientists, alien invasion and time travel, so are going the fairy tale and witch route.
1.NBC: Grimm - about a forensic scientist who knows fairy tales are real, and investigates them. Sort of the fairy tale version of Spooky Mulder. Or the X-Files for people who love fairy tales. It's David Greenwalt's baby.
Synopsis:Set in present-day Portland, Oregon, the series puts a new twist on the stories of the Brothers Grimm in which a homicide detective learns that he is a descendent of a group of hunters known as "Grimms", who fight to keep humanity safe from the supernatural creatures of the world. Upon learning of his destiny and that he is the last of his kind, he has to protect every living soul from the sinister storybook characters that have infiltrated the real world.
Air date: October 21, Friday.
2. ABC: Once Upon A Time - is another take on fairy tales entering the real world but this time from the writers of LOST.
From the inventive minds of Lost executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis comes a bold new imagining of the world, where fairy tales and the modern-day are about to collide.
And they all lived happily ever after – or so everyone was led to believe. Emma Swan knows how to take care of herself. She's a 28-year-old bail bonds collector who's been on her own ever since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Henry is now 10 years old and in desperate need of Emma's help. He believes that Emma actually comes from an alternate world and is Snow White and Prince Charming's missing daughter. According to his book of fairytales, they sent her away to protect her from the Evil Queen's curse, which trapped the fairytale world forever, frozen in time, and brought them into our modern world. Of course Emma doesn't believe a word, but when she brings Henry back to Storybrooke, she finds herself drawn to this unusual boy and his strange New England town. Concerned for Henry, she decides to stay for a while, but she soon suspects that Storybrooke is more than it seems. It's a place where magic has been forgotten, but is still powerfully close… where fairytale characters are alive, even though they don't remember who they once were. The epic battle for the future of all worlds is beginning, but for good to win, Emma will have to accept her destiny and fight like hell.
LOL!
3. Terra Nova - Fox - via Stephen Spielberg. It's basically Land of the Lost remade by the guy who did Jurassic Park. "A series about a family that travels back to pre-historic Earth as part of a larger effort to ensure a future for humanity. All they need to do is re-establish society while peacefully co-existing with their dinosaur neighbors."
4. Ringer - CW - Sarah Michelle Gellar's new role as twins...it's basically an espionage/twisty noir thriller. "A woman who witnessed a professional hit hides out by assuming the life of her rich identical twin after the twin disappears overboard while on a boat trip. The sister's seemingly fairy-tale existence turns out to be far more complicated than it appears, however, as it turns out someone's targeted her for elimination."
So not that bad. [I'm boycotting The Playboy Club - it just looks offensive. Pan Am - ditto (although it at least has a good cast - Christina Ricci). Mad Men - these shows aren't. Charlies Angels? Ugh - hated the first version and both movies. Prime Suspect (while I like the actress, I've grown tired of the genre, I think The Wire, Homicide Life on the Streets, and Helen Mirren's Prime Suspect ruined me forever regarding it), same deal for Person of Interest, Gifted, and Unforgettable. Blah.]
I'm personally looking forward to the returns of:
*The Good Wife (best show on, hands down)
*Vamp Diaries (it's just fun)
*The Walking Dead (AMC)
*Parenthood
*Grey's Anatomy (yes, I'm still watching...it jumps the shark and then jumps back again)
*Doctor Who
*Justified
HBO may go on hiatus until...Game Change pops up, since Game of Thrones isn't on again until 2012.
Also looking forward to - Sherlock popping up again, assuming it ever does. State of Play and Luther on BBC America after the wonderful The Hour is finished. And of course Dowton Abbey Part 2.
And that's about it. I still watch Glee - for the musical numbers and Jane Lynch, Supernatural for Jensen Anckles and Misha Collins, and Mark A. Shepard (I will miss Sebastian Roche, but he popped over to Vamp Diaries...so all is well. Also is it just me or does James Marsters keep popping up in paranormal cult tv series when they are sort of past their prime? Noticed Charisma Carpenter does the same thing. Those two remind me of why it really sucks to be a tv actor. LOL! That they are playing husband and wife. That is just hilarious.), Nikita, and Big Bang Theory. But I'm admittedly ambivalent at the moment. It's more than enough. I really don't need more tv shows. Barely can watch all the one's that I do.

Date: 2011-08-20 01:03 pm (UTC)No, from the previews Grimm is actually more like Angel or CSI - in that it actually has *cough*female*cough* main cast members. The man has a wife instead of a brother, a female captain instead of an insane father or uncle, there are no archangels and demons in sight.
And it focuses on fairy tales as opposed to old urban legends.

Date: 2011-08-20 02:08 pm (UTC)I didn't realize you were talking about the other characters who didn't think he was grieving. It has been quite a while since I saw the early episodes of S5 (almost a year).
I definitely agree about Quinn, his behavior is manipulative and self serving.... (another wrong guy for poor Deb).
