shadowkat: (Tv shows)

I listed all the night-time television series that are "currently" on somewhere in the world. Note currently. Not tv shows that are on hiatus or won't show up again until next year or recently ended. Which is why Game of Thrones, Orphan Black, Covert Affairs, Mad Men, Defiance, and Breaking Bad are not listed. Had to draw the line somewhere - too many frigging tv shows.

So below are the one's I know about and could remember, but do not necessarily watch. If your favorite isn't on the list - check Other, and list in the comments.

[ETA: Note to self - have someone beta your polls before submitting, so you won't make dumb mistakes like list one television show twice in the same poll. Points if you can figure out which one. UGH! And I forgot Dracula and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. ]

[Poll #1942396]

I'm watching...

Returning: OUaT, Revenge, New Girl, The Mindy Project, Arrow, AHS: Coven, Big Bang Theory, Parks and Rec, White Collar, Elementary, and Grimm

I'm also planning on trying Almost Human when it starts, and I've been interested in trying Reign.

Oh yes, I'm planning on trying Almost Human as well - it looks rather interesting.

Forgot to list Dracula and Brooklyn Nine-Nine in the poll.

I was very unhappy with Arrow last week. I gave it another try this week, but couldn't finish the episode. Much the same thing happened to me last year with Nikita. Call it the CW disease.

I should probably note that most of the tv I watch, I see on HULU. Pretty much all I see at the air time is Big Bang Theory.

It's that bad? I haven't tried it this year yet - but have all the episodes on the DVR. Thinking of marathoning over Thanksgiving weekend.

But I admittedly gave up on Nikita the second year. So if it's similar to what Nikita did...

You gave up on OUAT: Wonderland?

From: [identity profile] cactuswatcher.livejournal.com
It's same of the sort of thing that happened on Nikita. Many of the characters from the first season have changed sides or are otherwise behaving contrary to their old selves... The best new character on Arrow supposedly died in the pilot... That kind of thing.

Date: 2013-11-08 02:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shadowkat67.livejournal.com
Ohh...see I don't mind when they change sides, as long as it is built over time (example Spike and Faith), but when it is done sort of out of the blue - for plot reasons or relationship reasons? I get annoyed. Which was what happened with Nikita and why I lost interest.

And yes, you're correct CW series do that a lot. They often sacrifice characters for hair-pin plot twists or shockers. Not taking the time to build up to the plot twist.

My brother and a lot of my friends watch tv via their ipads and lap-tops, and it has to be murder on your neck and back. Not to mention your eyes. How do you do it?

I'd actually argue that this particular twist was very well laid out and holds up perfectly, to a degree that I'm convinced it was part of the long-term arcing plan from the start. It's that woven into the fabric of the show, and holds up to scrutiny and rewatching. But I generally agree for CW shows. In fact, there's *another* thing happening on Arrow that's a pretty atrocious example of a character being written completely out of character for plot reasons. Don't want to say much more, though, for fear of spoiling either twist!

I'm watching;

New; The Crazy Ones, Agents of Shield, Sleepy Hollow

Returning; American Horror Story, The Walking Dead and Modern Family

The only new show I've quit so far is Dracula. I was really excited for that series but I was so bored by the pilot that I just can't even be bothered watching the next episode.

I'm not having a good run so far. I am actually finding The Crazy Ones really enjoyable which I never thought I'd say but I'm pretty apathetic to both AoS and Sleepy Hollow right now. I thought this week's episode was a major improvement for AoS but it still has a long way to go and I fell asleep halfway through Sleepy Hollow (not the show's fault! I was really tired) but can't muster up the energy to start the episode again. I'm sure I'll like it well enough when I eventually get around to it but that can't be a good sign :/

I feel much the same way about The Walking Dead. I got really invested in it last year but so far I've been pretty bored. I've still got episode 4 waiting to be watched but can't really be bothered right now. The series is starting to become a bit tedious now, ya know?

SN and Modern Family have suffered a similar fate. Modern Family’s quality has really nosedived since last season and I’m worried it’s going to follow the same fate as The Office. Both shows began to suffer in S4 and then became really hit and miss and I’d hate to lose interest in MF like I did with The Office. Supernatural just can’t hold my interest and I doubt I’ll stick with it over the entire season.

The only show I’m crazy about right now is American Horror Story. It just gets better and better every week and I’m in love. It’s the only series where I rewatch the episodes more than once after I’ve seen them (several times in fact) and which I look forward to from week-to-week. S3 is the best so far.

I'm watching OUaT, The Good Wife, Sleepy Hollow, The Blacklist, Agents of SHIELD, Supernatural, Revolution, OUaT Wonderland, Vampire Diaries, Gray's Anatomy, Glee, Elementary, Grimm, Dracula.

Fave faves: The Good Wife, Elementary, Revolution, The Blacklist, OUaT

Very Good: Supernatural, Sleepy Hollow, OUaT Wonderland, Grimm

Variable: Glee, Gray's Anatomy

On the Fence: Agents of SHIELD, Vampire Diaries, Dracula

If I had to recommend one show that I'm not sure my flist is watching, it would be Revolution. This one was on the fence for me the first half of the first season, but I'm really glad I stuck with it, because it got steadily better, and the second season has been just superb. Two caveats would be-- It's very, very dark, both in terms of the storyline and often visually, for reasons I explained in a post a few weeks back. Also, it would be very hard for someone to follow if they just dropped in on it without seeing at least the latter part of the previous season.

Only ticked two things. And with one of them I'm playing catch up on DVD (mid-season 3 of The Good Wife), while with the other (AoS), it wasn't on last week and I didn't miss it in the slightest

I'm still watching Marvel: Agents of SHIELD, but just barely, I actually have to remind myself to watch it and when I do, I don't pay much attention to it.

This is also the first season that I'm actually watching AHS.

I actually really like the twists and character work on Arrow. And I agree that the specific twist I think you're thinking off felt completely right.

Of the new shows, I'm still watching the three sitcoms: Trophy Wife, B99 and Crazy Ones. (listed in order of what quality I prefer)

I don't watch Reign, but as an amateur historian of the time period I enjoy reading the recaps for the... liberties... the CW takes with the time period.

Of the recurring shows I still follow (goodbye Modern Family) The Good Wife is far and away #1 for me.

Ah, I'm in the boat on various series, and admittedly behind on OUAT: Wonderland again.

I didn't count Crazy Ones - but I have watched it On Demand. And occasionally watch Glee On Demand.

On Demand is a wonderful thing. Gone are the days in which we had to choose.

Thanks! I was considering deleting the ten episodes I have saved to my DVR, but now you've sparked my curiousity enough to keep them and do a marathon.

Getting the impression that The Walking Dead isn't worth the bother this season? You're not the only one who has given it less than stellar reviews and I know they have a new show-runner. (That series has a lot of writer turn over.)

I only ask - because it is taking up space on my DVR and I'm debating whether to watch or delete.

RE: AoS - I'm getting the feeling most people are rather apathetic. They neither hate it nor love it, just rather bored by it.

Thanks...been debating whether to keep the 5-10 episodes of Revolution that are taking up space on my DVR at the moment. I saw the first season and was curious enough not to remove from my DVR schedule of taping. Also it's not opposite anything I like better. (Unlike the extreemly crowded Sunday and Thursday nights).

After your rec - I think I may hold onto them and check it out - when the mood hits me.

I've more or less given up on Glee and Agents of Shield. Haven't tried Dracula yet, and Vamp Diaries is still to a small degree holding my attention.

Fav's are The Good Wife and OUAT. (Also have become addicted to Scandal, which is a great political thriller/satire.)

Yes, the online consensus appears to be "apathy" in regards to AoS. No one hates it. No one loves it. People are just sort of ambivalent. Which means it might actually survive. LOL!

Agree on The Good Wife - it's far and away my fav as well. (Possibly why I inadvertently listed it twice...Fruedian slip??) Definitely the best scripted and acted series on television.

I should probably give B99 and Trophy Wife a few more chances...they did have potential. The Crazy Ones - I've been checking out on Demand at different points.

Reign - is crack. Its not quite as much fun as Vampire Diaries, which has a better sense of humor. But it is fun in places. It's hard to take the history bit too seriously after having watched the Tudors and sigh, Downton Abbey. Television writers don't appear to like reading history, do they?

Thanks for the Arrow rec - above.

The popular consensus on AoS appears to be apathy.

"Trophy Wife" probably suffers from its unfortunate title (like the sadly underwatched "Cougar Town") but is actually a fairly decent ensemble show. Not sure why they didn't just air it after Modern Family. As to B99, I've been a fan of Michael Schur since "Fire Joe Morgan" - it has a good cast and I can see it having a similar trajectory to 'Parks & Rec' - another show I like that not enough people watch...

And no, TV writers don't seem to care for history. I will give them points, because that French court was actually quite interesting even if they are playing very loose with it. (And it was an era with major female players, many of whom they haven't gotten to yet...) So maybe it'll inspire someone to read a book...

Well, you might enjoy it but so far it has left me pretty cold. I guess after 4 seasons I might just be burnt out by the story they're telling. It's hardly a "fun" show to watch and I'm becoming pretty desensitised to the horrors the characters are going through. They have tried to change the threat somewhat this season though, for what it's worth.

Yeah, there's really nothing to hate about AoS. It's a harmless show that doesn't really elicit much strong reaction one way or another. I wish it did. I did find last week's episode a major improvement though.

Only problem is historical fiction isn't all that much better - they take liberties too. Most of the Mary Queen of Scots fiction makes - her out to be the poor victim and Queen Elizabeth to be nasty. But is it true?

My father, a historian, once told me that historians are taught to question everything, down to the minute details...because history is often interpreted according to whatever the personal preferences are of the historian(s) recording/writing about it. (In short another subject, open to lots of embellishment, manipulation, and interpretation.)

So..if you want actual history? Read a non-fictional book with a lot of credible sources.

The Witches of East End is a fun little show, and I liked that its really more about sisters, and mothers and daughters. I love Joanna Beauchamp played by Julia Ormond, she's powerful and does suffer a bit from 'do as I say not as I do' but I think that's what makes her interesting because I feel she's aware of that but is also in denial. There is one aspect of the show I loathe and its a love triangle. I'm never fond of those.

Oh... well, 'tumblr watching' is more of just looking at gifsets and only watching select scenes some fans cut together from the show so I could avoid the bad parts, and just enjoy what I like.
