It's certainly ironic that the singers from that show that have gone on the biggest amount of applause, with the exception of Carrie Underwood (who I think had a singing career in place prior to Idol but hadn't gotten picked up) - were not the winners. Clay Aiken lost to Reuben, Chris Dougherty lost to Taylor Hicks and is right now outselling Hicks, Hudson got booted over Fantasia and LaToya - and Fantasia looked at Hudson and allegedly stated you "stole" my role. LOL!
I think that if you last long enough in American Idol to get into the top ten, then you have enough exposure and face recognition to insure a career if you have any talent (including stage presence) at all. I'm glad to hear Chris Dougherty is doing well, I really admired his style (and I really didn't like Taylor Hick's style at all). I don't call in...but I do enjoy watching the later rounds, when they are made to cover different song writers, or sing songs from different periods. It gives you a good idea of the singer's ability to stretch, and/or be true to their own style (both things are good, but it is always interesting to watch).
Oh I heard about Fantasia thinking Hudson 'stole' her role! Fact is that Fantasia can barely get through an interview, I don't think she could ever do on screen what Jennifer Hudson did.
I watch more or less the same way you do - in the later rounds. To see how they handle different song choices - off and on, it's not appointment tv for me and only if I don't find something else more entertaining. Seen the humilation a thons this week, because nothing else on and didn't feel like popping in a DVD...but cringe-worthy. Very cringe-worthy.
Agreed on Hicks and Fantasia. Yes, Fantasia has a good voice, but not the presence and chutzpah that Hudson has. I honestly think someone out there, probably Randy Jackson grabbed Hudson and signed her to a recording contract before Idol even ended. If you saw her rendition of Circle of Life that season....the woman has a voice on her.

Also excepting Kelly Clarkson. She's doing pretty well, careerwise. The other winners, not as well...
Yeah, but the woman's voice makes me cringe in the same way that Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Clay Aiken's do. Just not a fan of pop, I'm afraid. Every time I hear it in malls, it's like it won't let go of me and I want to pull my hair out, specialists in bad earworm/muzac songs..."oops I did it again".
