I've spent far too much time today playing on my lj. When I felt guilty over it - Wales and my father both said the same thing - it is your day off. You get to do whatever you damn well please on your day off. Guilt - it's a funky thing. Why do we feel guilty about things that are more or less harmless and make us happy? Read more... )

It's late and I need to sleep. So may or may not come back and review Lost and FNL at a later point. Enjoyed both. Was somewhat surprised by my enjoyment of Lost. Oh, the guest-star in the flashback? That's the same woman we saw in Sawyer's flashback episode earlier in the season. The fun thing about Lost is guess where you saw that actor in the Lost series before?
(Not where you saw them period.) Much fun.
shadowkat: (writing)
Pimping again - from one weary, frustrated writer to the rest, read this - it hails from [livejournal.com profile] tightropegirl's journal - a woman who wrote her first novel on a computer in the bowels of EF Hutton while working the late shift. (I know this because I happen to know the guy who was working next to her at the time.) And who, (tightropegirl not the guy), is now an accomplished television writer on House. There is hope. Always hope. Even on dreary cold January days like this one... You just have to keep plugging away is all.

Certainly made me feel better - after writing several paragraphs late last night on my own novel, only to blast myself for it this morning and think no, no, no...doesn't work and no one will like it because the writing has more in common with sarah dunant than marcel proust.
The inner critic it is not always one's friend. So another quick scan of the lj, then back to my novel for a bit, dinner, and more knitting.

Making loads of progress on the knitting. Have graduated from my first swarf or patch to a patchwork scarf using two skienes of yarn. Actually switched yarns today. Not as hard as one would think. Actually knitting is proving to be much easier than pottery (not to mention cheaper and far less messy) and salsa dancing ever were. Plus it has the added benefit of being portable - you can knit anywhere. It's also easier than getting stories and novels published and job-hunting - but that's another matter.

[Knitting update: Have made progress on the knitting. Figured out how to bind off my stitches and how to knit 20 rows without adding or subtracting or dropping stitches - which tend to be the biggest hurdles, particularly dropping. Hate dropping. After binding off my small patch - which is long enough and wide enough to serve as a nifty book mark, attempting the next assignment in the book - a patchwork scarf, 30 rows, bind, new yarn, 30 more rows, bind, new yarn. If I can handle that, we'll move to purl stitch. Goal to figure out how to do knit and purl by Jan 30. Have three goals by Jan 30: finish novel, figure out knitting, and get job.
Yes, I tend to set high goals for myself - this we know. So right now? One out of three won't be too bad.]

Saw the British flick, Notes on A Scandel - yesterday for about six bucks. Was the early show. The film is notable for three reasons: 1) It stars two women in the lead roles - both older than 30, the lead role - in her late 60's early 70's. 2)The characters are complex and not necessarily likable and both do horrendous things. 3)The men are in minor roles - the film focuses almost entirely on the female relationship. All three of these things are rare to find in movies right now. Oh and the actress with the semi-nude scene? Is Judi Dench.

Got to give the Brits credit they are churning out fascinating flicks this year, far more interesting than the current crop from Hollywood - so for that matter are a few other countries, such as Mexico, France, China, and Spain. But that's just my opinion. I tend to adore films that have a bit of meat on their bones and haunt me long after the final reel has completed.
Review of Notes on A Scandel - cut for vague spoilers. Very vague. )
